Figured in case of a phone failure and just for funsies I’d get a tread going on my 1991 F250. Here’s the day it arrived in my driveway in late August of 2024.

Long-ish story’s short version- man gets hurt and truck sits for many years. I saved it from the scrap yard.

This truck was bought new in Des Moines by a guy about a mile from home, fast forward to 2012 ish and the guy bought it new was doing some fence repairs and somehow got ran over by his little ford tractor. Thankfully he survived but wasn’t quite the same (understandably), still a very nice guy. The truck was in town getting a new clutch put in it at the place my old man drives for. While he was in the hospital they drove it home to him and gave the keys to his sons. And there it ended up sitting until I acquired it last August. I’d approached him about buying it in 2023 and he declined, then one day the local salvage yard owner called me after learning I’d tried buying it in the past. A quick deal is struck and I gave him his $50 he had in it and the next day he dropped it off in the driveway since it was still on the rollback at his shop.

For a good portion of the decade plus it sat next to the gravel road with the drivers window mostly down. Needless to say the mice and Mother Nature had a great time. The engine bay and interior were disasters.

Many people would’ve looked at this truck and happily let it meet the scrap man. And despite never owning one the 87-91 F series trucks have always appealed to me. Especially this one as it’s the perfect farm truck for me. Drivetrain is a 351, ZF5, and BW1355. Sadly the gears were 3.55 but that would be rectified in the future.

The very day it arrived in the driveway I dropped a battery in it, cleaned the air intake tubes out (full of mouse nests from throttle body to filter box), then tickled it with ether and it fired.

Will continue with this thread shortly and update it to get caught up to present day. Doesn’t hardly look the same anymore

Luckily right around the time I bought this truck my friend decided to get rid of his ex daily driver F250 with a dead 460. Complete with very nice interior and new fuel tank/lines. $500 later I had a truck with new fuel tank, pump, fuel lines, alternator, battery, and good interior.

Got the truck drug over to the work area and got to work. Someone thought they needed the cat at some point in the past so I had some work ahead.

Fitting up the new exhaust

Exhaust revision one done using 2.5” pipe and a pair of flow masters. I had to do the exhaust first knowing dang good and well I wouldn’t be as motivated once I had the engine running and truck on the ground.

Not pictured was the install of the fresh fuel tank and lines from the donor truck which happened concurrently with the exhaust build. Of course during the first real test run after all of this work the 2G alternator decided to catch fire (poor design on the plug causes this). Luckily the parts truck had a new one with updated wiring so it was installed in its place. Eventually I’ll step up to a high amp 3G but the 2G keeps getting it done.

More updates to come

My brother for years had a 91 F 250 with a 300/6, 5 speed. It was a great truck!
This one has been fantastic to me over the past year or so. Honestly it’s one of my favorite trucks I’ve ever had, maybe just because it was saved from certain death but either way it’s good fun!

I dig it!
Thank you! I’ll try to get another update or two done today to get us closer to present day

Nice good ol farm truck. My best friends grandpa had an old ford just like this he drove forever on his farm. Bricknose frontends are just plain ugly though. I prefer the older bullnose or newer rounded ones. Here's my kids F350 we saved from the scrapyard last year for his first truck. '93 460/auto

Much cleaner than mine that’s a hec of a save! Call me crazy but I do love the bricknose era of truck. I get they’re a face only a mother could love, and for some reason I love them. Still crazy callin it an old truck at times and then realizing it’s younger than I am.

Next step on the revival was to get the interior whipped into shape. Not a ton of pictures were taken during this phase since it was quite nasty. Plus when working on stuff I tend to get in the zone and completely ignore my phone for hours on end. After the carpet was removed I had some patching to do from the window being open from so long.

Not bad for a rust belt truck
IMG_2362.jpeg

Far from professional, but keeps me from reenacting the flinstones.
IMG_2363.jpeg

And of course the pups needed a test drive. Not pictured during the work but you can see the nicer door panels were already installed during this pic. Can also see the carpet from the donor in the next one

Charles is addicted to this truck. He enjoys this spot IMG_2481.jpeg

At this point the ol gal had new rubber, new soft brake lines, and a new RF caliper. I was very pleasantly surprised with how good it drives and rides. Plus I got it mainly to give the dogs rides and beat around the farm to keep the dog hair out of my 2500hd. It definitely delivered on all counts.

My kid loves it. He's done a ton of work to it. Glad you decided to pop back in, always liked your builds. You still doing the Cat or whoever it was field mechanic thing?

Thanks man it’s good to be back! I’ve been away far too long. Kinda trying to shy away from the normal social medias a bit and the crowd here has always been some great guys. And yes it still working for Ziegler cat, surpassed 14 years back in September. Usually working on industrial engines or generators, I actually just missed going wheeling in Kansas with Greg due to having to work on this things twin (just out of frame and tore all to hell). G3520H natural gas prime power generator. IMG_0816.jpeg

Mentioning wheeling with Greg I’ll have to get a thread going on the *cough* Jeep *cough* that’s gracing my driveway. It’s no squarebody but it was dirt cheap and it should provide me much fun in the coming years. Once this thread is sort of caught up I’ll get one going for it

Glad to see a build thread on this one! Great farm truck and backroad cruiser with the hounds!

A couple weeks worth of driving the truck in early September the new yet old clutch started slipping. Sadly no pictures taken of said clutch only one of my assistant watching me remove the shifter to drop the trans. Mice had built a nest inside the bell housing which was slung into the pressure plate and eventually bound it up into a partially released state. Already had the the new parts so a new clutch kit was installed along with new master and slave cylinders

My fuzzy assistance
IMG_2515.jpeg

Not long after I got tired of not having a cup holder I came up with this elegant solution. The cup holders from the jump seat out of my 2006 2500hd I used to have. Screwed right to the bottom of the bench seat frame they’re perfectly placed and move with the seat if someone of shorter stature moves it forward. Also on a whim I decided that with cooler weather it would be nice to have a power passenger window for use with the dogs since I couldn’t just leave it down all the time as I had been doing.

The truck didn’t really change much during harvest, I put the L shaped transfer tank and 27” weatherguard in it for harvest and it did its job of farm truck admirably. This pic was taken early December right about the time I decided more storage space was in order. Stuff was about to change faster than I planned, just didn’t know it yet

Switch location, I wrestled with whether to square it up to the back of the bezel or that little accent line on the dash. In the end I went with this as it’s at a decent angle to hit from the seat. The relays for the window motor are inside the dash behind the switch and fed from the factory power window breaker

With the regulator installed the old crank hole was plugged.
IMG_5657.jpeg

And it met the approval of the fuzzies, so far after a year it’s been flawless and possibly one of my favorite mods to the truck.

Sadly the pictures didn’t wanna go in in order, and I’m having a hec of a time sorting it out from my phone for some reason

late December rolled around and I had finally decided to put my service body on the truck. Last truck I had this on was my ‘95 F250 powerstroke about 10 years ago now and it’s been a mouse house ever since. The weather was not good the weekend I wanted to install it so I loaded it on my trailer and hauled it 2 hours southeast to my friends place. The 351 was not happy with the not aerodynamic cargo behind it. The trip home with an empty trailer was much more enjoyable.

The body is a 70’s vintage powers brand. This was after I got the interior cleaned out and washed on one of those random warm days we got in January

Little did I know what a blank canvas this one mod would turn out to be

Next big update was late January my dad told me to check Facebook about 8 at night as he’d tagged me in something.IMG_5210.pngIMG_5211.jpegIMG_5212.jpegIMG_5214.jpeg

Being this was a steal of a deal I didn’t wrestle with the decision whether to call that late at night or wait until the next morning. The guy was really nice and a deal was struck for the following afternoon.

The following day I took the 2500hd a couple hours east and loaded the crane up. The guy was a fellow field service tech from another company and at his house I was within spitting distance of a good customer of mine. Turns out his company is working on a job site about 5 miles from my house. Small world

Anyways he had this tucked away in his garage. Was an old SEMA build from way back he said, C20 burb.

IMG_5227.jpeg

While the burb itself was clean and straight the best part was lurking under the hood.

IMG_5226.jpeg

To say I was jealous was an understatement. Sadly the building was tight quarters so I couldn’t get any better shots of it. He drove it back from the southwest when he bought it.

Anyhow back to my rust bucket, there was still an ounce of daylight left when I got home. So the little kid in me came out.

IMG_5245.jpeg

It fit like a glove length wise. Truck was definitely going to need some assistance holding it up as well. But that had to wait a bit as winter wasn’t done with me yet and my work area’s weather was about to turn for the worse again.

That's one handy upgrade! The bed and the crane. I really like the look of a single wheel service truck with some mudders and maybe a slight lift.

Both of your service trucks look weird to me though, every one I've ever been around has had the crane on the pass side.

It’s about to get a bit taller, Dana 60 front goes in next weekend if things go to plan

The F250 I ended up going crane passenger side. That being said I do really like the company trucks crane being driver side with how I park it in my work area. Plus keeps me from walking around the truck for tools all the time
