Guys,

I finally got my 90 chevy 350 crate motor & modified TBI running right for the first time in 6 months ! Beside running right, I can now get 17-18 mpg!

I spent 6 months and 5 chips fooling around with the guy in North Carolina, that so many people recommend(but I have to question those that recommend him, Have you ever used him???)

I found a master EFI tech in Littleton, Co:

David C. Johnson

The difference is that CPE reads your EFI data in " real time" vs. a data file that you send him. He doesn't waste your time & money on mailing chips & data files back and forth, or your vehicle running poorly for months on end. He gets results !! And he works on any EFI system. Plus he can do Turbos, Blowers & dual TBI setups if that is what you want.
If you've spent $2k, 4k, 6k on your motor, transmission, exhaust & fuel upgrades and it doesn't run right, you owe it to youself to get it tuned right !

I was so frustrated with the "guy in North Carolina" that I was considering putting on a carb or spending big bucks on a "Stand alone" EFI system from Holley or Edelbrock ! Then I thought about driving it to one of the major EFI companies in Texas or Calif. to get it running right. Finally I called Burt Chevrolet, where I bought most of my GMPP parts & he put me on to CPE.

It's really nice to be able to recommend a guy who does the job right !

Good luck with your project !

yes I took my truck to him ! And seeing that you live in Ca. I would take your vehicle to someplace in Ca. Like maybe Turbo City or some such place. Doing this data logging and sending it over the internet leads to a lot of confusion and miss-understandings.
There's no substitute for having them drive & log in real time! So I am mainly recommending that you find someone within driving distance and take it to them. If you live within a one state radius of Colorado, then I recommend CPE.

When I first joined the CK5 Forums, I commented on my frustrations with the guy in North Carolina. I thought I'd save time with the guy in North Carolina, because the mods I'd done to my 93 GMC were not radical. Well the engine (with the chip from the that guy in North Carolina) was running lean at upper RPM's, and rich in the lower RPM's. I actually had black smoke from the tail pipe when I crossed a over a 6200 feet above sea level mountain pass.

Well to make a long story short, I program my own chips now, using data logging software from DataMaster. I've even programmed chips for others, but I usually need to daily drive the vehicle to / from work a couple times to get enough data to be accurate with the chip tuning.

So when I'm asked what is the ULTIMATE TBI mod? ... I say "being able to tune the PROM chip yourself."

Yeah my truck was running lean from mid range on up. Then idle was super rich and the truck surged something terrible !!!! It surged at idle, low speed and slowing down at 70 mph downhill, it surged at 70 mph ! To make matters worse I was running the "guy from North Carolina's" fuel pump, and 18 psi spring at the fuel pressure he told me to run. After 6 months and 5 chips, he finally realized I must have too much fuel pressure and he had me change back to the stock spring, which gave me 13 psi, and then the surge was better but still annoying.

If you can program yourself that is great !! But some of us don't have that skill or knowhow. So for those of you needing professional help, I recommend going to a tuner so he can drive it and read it in real time! I think the "guy in NC" could have fixed my problems if he had my truck there in NC.

But this guy in Littleton Co. got me on the right track before I brought it to him. He had me modifying my fuel regulator with a vacuum fitting, so I had 11 psi at idle and 16 psi at zero vacuum. That took care of the surging altogether !

Then I took it to him for final tuning, as he doesn't really want to turn wrenchs. He'll tell you what to do to get it close so when you take it there he can concentrate on the tuning only.

He charged me $450.

The guy in NC charged me @ $350, plus 6 months of aggravation, frustration and 13 to 14 mpg for 6 months. Last week I drove from Colorado Springs to Rifle Co. 250 miles, over two 11,000 foot passes and got 16.9 mpg !

If you have the skill to DIY more power to you ! But for me, Command Performance Eng. was an answer to prayer !

wish I lived in CO! and no i will not take my truck to turbo city or anywhere else nearby that advertises chip burning and tuning. I have spoken to several people in person and they all want $$$$$$$$$$. I would rather find another vehicle at that point. Turbo city first told me they were not interested in tuning my truck because it was a street driven vehicle... but because he was feeling nice, he might help me out, but$$$$$$$$$$$. Also tried a mail order chip... gave a alot of build info and some data logging... Total POS! Never again! Runs better eith the stock setup!

not worth my time to pay other people to guess what the hell is going on, and im not going to work 2 jobs and suck wang for a year just to pay for a few more ponies. Just dont like my truck that much.
Wished I lived in CO!

i know this is an old thread but anyone know of a place in tx that burns chips closer to houston the better

I'm.glad this came up. He ran an ad on Craigslist for a while then removed it. He gave me a good quote for a TBI mod and lost his number and I'm sure its the same guy
