HankScorpio submitted a new Build:

The Bruin

Here is a 1989 Suburban I just picked up. It was a research rig for the University of Wyoming. Prof. Hank Harlow used this truck to research bears all over the rockies. The research included how bears hibernate and applications in medicine concerning muscle deterioration. He would crawl into bear dens while they were hibernating and take samples, what a total badass. This truck has sat for 10 years since his retirement and was just sold at auction where I bought it. The researchers named it "The Bruin" and my buddy Tyler stuck a bear toy to the dash up in Colter Bay (Tetons) about 20 years ago. The name and toy will be staying.
I already have 2 lifted squares, (crew cab and k5) so this truck will most likely just stay a utility rig. It has a great drivetrain but isn't much to look at right now.

Specs:
1989 V2500 Suburban
TBI 350, possibly only 79,000 miles.
Manual trans, SM465
NP241, (to be verified)
Barn door
Bench seats, rubber floor, manual windows/locks

That is pretty close to how I like my trucks to be equipped as it is. Not bad. Good one to have around.

I like it. Base model goodness. Less crap to go wrong.
This is how I feel about it too. The suburbans have never been my must have trucks but this one has a lot going for it. Good solid drivetrain and no frills inside. If I can get it running well and cleaned up it should be a nice solid rig. I know it had fleet maintenance so it was in good shape 10 years ago when they stopped using it. I guess the SM465 millennial anti theft kept it from moving to another department.

I totally agree. If it had an automatic they would have kept on using it and it would probably be beaten to death by now. The manual is what saved it for sure.

Plus I know from Larry's polar bear burb the 465 can be replaced with a nv4500 if you wanted the extra gear and not require any driveshaft mods.

I took the Bruin out to the shop last night to see what I had. Figured it would be a long night of trying to get it running. Put a new 800 CCA battery in. Fired right up! Backed it off the trailer and pulled it into the shop under its own power. Started cleaning up the interior. Latest paperwork I found was a 2005 insurance card. Not bad for 14 years sitting. Found 4 gallons of antifreeze inside so figuring on a coolant leak somewhere. Years of field work and more years of sitting in a dirt lot have left me with a really dirty truck. Cleared out a couple mice nests. Overall its ok and will clean up decent. Pulled out all the traps so I could vacuum, 56 traps in total. These traps cost $20-$40 each from what I can tell, If I can find a buyer, even at $5-$10 it will give me some parts money back.
