The desire to go faster...

There is really no reason to steer when you're going straight through a mud pit. You'll still have directional control anyway, especially when your tires are spinning.
 
It is harder to steer a truck with a welded front, it will not turn as sharp, but as tim said, you shouldn't need to steer much in the pit, just small adjustments.

Different gear ratios can accomplish the same as larger tires in the front. I just used different sized tires, because I wanted TSL's in the front and boggers in the rear. Stick with narrower tires in the front as long as there is a bottom to the pit you run in, You are trying to cut through less mud that way. Also, trucks running wide tires in the front seemed like they could never keep it straight.
 
All the weight transfers to the rear in shallow pits anyway, one would think that wide tires in the rear and skinny tires up front help balance the front/rear floation.
 
The weight didn't seem to transfer to the rear right when I had the full stock spring packs in, after taking out half the pack, the wieght transfer was great and helped alot off the line.
 
I would put a set of 35x16 boggers out back and somthing skinny up front... also a fairly good stall like a 2400-2600(espically if your going with a big cam) also the 8" springs may not help you that much I would probably pull a leaf out of each... 14Bolts are great but are BIG a 9" would be a great choice(but I hate putting ford parts on a Chevrolet) or even a 12Bolt welded should hold for your application
oh yea and if you end up with a TH400 trans brakes are cool /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
