The Great Smaug

Bumping this for non-judgmental motivation...

I've been trying to get ahold of you, Mr. Partsman. I've been toying with the idea of snagging the NV4500, turbocharger, and serpentine setup from the unloved farm truck and putting them in this truck. Now that I've accidentally talked myself into a hydrobooster repair, I'm wondering what differences a GMT-400 hydroboost unit has vs. what I have in the truck now. Rockauto lists 2 different part numbers, but I've heard of folks swapping them back and forth. Does your magic parts catalog give you any insight as to the dimensions & swappability of these units? At a casual glance they appear to be the same with different backing plates. If that unit will work, it just might push me over the edge in parting out the tow rig.

I'm not sure who to tag with this question, but I remember @swettysblazer doing a hydroboost swap a while back.

I hate to say it @campfire, but my system does not give me that kind of info. I am useless here.

You've said that waaaaaaaay too many times in my threads. :deal: SMH. :doah:

I don't know if my projects are weird or what. But CK5 has left a bunch of my questions unanswered. If you are ever bored, read through my NV4500 thread from a couple years back. Looking back through the process I feel like I stumbled myself into having a stick-shift truck, I didn't find easy answers in my searching. Even simple things like setting up gears seem to draw blank stares from a bunch of people. Where is Eric when you need him?

Somebody out there knows about hydroboosters, I've seen answers on here. I just don't remember who. :dunno:

So you want to know if you can use some of the parts for the 93 hydro unit on the 8o`s version?

I`ve never seen that question answered or asked on here before.

Yes, your projects are odd.

Why is that? IMO, the entire purpose of building a custom truck is to get the combination of parts that you want to have. Every build should be unique, there's nothing cool about copy & paste builds. Isn't that what we make fun of in Jeep owners? :dunno:

Nuts. I might be on my own again. :1zhelp: The part I broke is the "Input Rod & Piston Assembly."

(thanks to @nutt7 for the graphic)

I'd be happy either swapping input rods or just bolting the GMT-400 booster on if it were a match. If not, I may not want to cobble stuff together. These systems are already on the touchy side, it's pretty easy to lock up the brakes on a hydroboosted 1/2-ton. If I manage to screw up the pedal/boost ratios it could get worse yet.

This could turn into a fairly expensive mistake, in terms of dollars-per-minute-of-carelessness. And I'm not even sure how I managed to break it! :doah:

Just get a replacement from Martin or someone on here. I wouldn't rip off the other truck that still runs
for that one piece that may or may not work for you.

Now don't get your panties in a bunch. I am all for being unique. I have a SAS truck that is every bit of the word unique.

What I am saying, is I am in the parts industry. I can tell you what part came on what vehicle. I cannot tell you what might work here and there. I can only tell that information from experience.

No, the problem is that the truck is sitting because nobody wants to drive it. It's not in awesome shape, and Dad is tired of having it sit. We both dislike dealing with CL buyers, and nobody in the family wants it, so it's in a sad spot.

I am in need of a stick-shift tranny. I'd prefer an NV3500, but an NV4500 is still a fine box. At some point I'll want some boost, and I already want the serpentine setup. So parting out the truck is a real possibility given the situation. The hydroboost unit looks the same from the outside. If it happens to be the same on the inside, I have a new home for it. Otherwise I'll be looking for a replacement.

I understand. I just figured that you could cross-check years to see what applications fit a 1984 Suburban (which is an ability that I do not have aside from looking through the Rockauto catalog, which works the opposite way). When you have a minute, send me a quote for buying the correct hydrobooster from your yard. Assuming this is easier to find than the last part I had you look up. :wink1:

Well if it's yours use as you wish. FREE PARTS!

But they don't look like a simple swaparoo to me?
