But they don't look like a simple swaparoo to me?

The basic housing looks the same, visually. The mounting plate is probably different, but I remember someone on here switching plates (perhaps it was @Kay86K5? :dunno:). The M/C may well be different, and I don't want to tear too deeply into a happily working brake system.

Over the holiday weekend I picked up my dog dish caps and also a set of Ford wheels from @78K30. They come in a rusty grey color, vs. the rusty white color that the trailer is running. Here are what they look like side-by-side.

I was surprised to find such a large gap between the lockout and the cap. It's much larger than the gap that I had with the rally rim caps. My first thought was that I was dealing with a K30 cap, but the lip is too small.

As I look at the grey truck with the grey rims, I'm starting to think of skipping the paint job and just running them as is. Once I get the beauty rings on there will be such a tiny amount of metal showing that it just doesn't seem to be worthwhile.

For reference, this is the 5th wheel that I have, which will serve as a spare. Someone painted the white rim grey.

I then put the beauty rings on to get another side-by-side comparison.

The more I think about it, the more I think that painting these rims is nearly pointless. 95% of the rim isn't visible anyways, and the stripe that's showing is so small that the white and grey rims look fairly similar. Really, they're aluminum-colored rims at this point. And when the caps are off the grey is actually a pretty good match with the truck's color. The spare has some white patches showing, but it is just a spare.

I think I'm talking myself out of caring so much about this trivial detail.

Nope, I never swapped brake hyrdroboost master cylinders...I only converted my crew cab from auto to manual and swapped in a hyrdroboost manual pedal assembly....my booster is untouched in my truck. According to my understanding, the GMT booster and the square body booster are not swappable, unless you want to do some fab work to get it in, then anything is possibly....but not a bolt in swap from what I know.

Not sure who I'm thinking of, then. I remember pictures of removing the large nut holding it onto the plate with a comment about how the socket had to be ground down to fit. That's all I can remember at this point. :dunno:

I'm leaning toward grabbing a reman unit, I don't feel like opening a can of worms here. I have enough cans open already. :haha:

Why run a trim ring with a hub cap?

Martin

I'm not dead-set on running them. But they do cover the rust spots. :haha:

I like the caps-without-rings look, but I have the rings lying around and I think they're an improvement for the wheels without caps.

With both rings and caps, I can't decide whether I like it or whether it's too shiny.

My original inspiration for the 2 rigs were these pictures from your wheel thread (no rings):

I don't have rings for the 15" rims, so those will just be painted and used with your hub caps.

I'm gathering ideas at this point. Wheels and tires won't be needed on either rig until the winter salt demons are gone, at the very earliest. I do, however, wish to get at least one of the 15" wheels painted up and mounted in the near future. Big Blue is in need of a spare now that I sold all 5 of the wagon wheels. Not a big deal...until it is a big deal. ;)

Best part about the Ford rims is they are 7" wide!

If you don't paint them white Martin will be pissed!
:haha:

Sadly the ones I hooked him up with are only 6 or 6.5 which is annoying but for the price of free I don't want to hear no complaints :haha:

I bought a set of 4 stock 1990 Ford 8 lug rims back in the early 90's for 30 bucks at a yard sale, the guy had an F-250 4x4 and his wife had bought him 4 new fancy rims for Xmas..

I ran those on my '77 GMC K2500 a long time, the center holes were not hub centric as far as butting against the axle flange, but I never had any issues, and most aftermarket rims have extra large center holes anyway,so they will fit more vehicles..

I liked the fact my GM hub caps fit the Ford rims ok,I did use the
1-1/6" Ford lug nuts though, because my GM ones looked like they might pull through the rim holes, but I did use the GM ones once for awhile with no troubles..the taper is larger on the Ford lug nuts, and I liked the meatier hex, less likely to round off..

I think the Ford rims are a bit wider than the GM ones,I have run one or two Ford ones with the GM's and noticed no weird handling or anything..I prefer to have all 4 rims identical however..

I still have those rims, but have since gotten 4 more GM 8 lug 16" rims,so they are not being used at the moment..they were a dull gray color when I got them and that oem paint is still holding up pretty well, despite them being out to the weather most of the time I've had them..I painted the back side of all my rims with aluminum rustoleum,it seems to ward off rust longer than anything else I have used...looks decent too..

Man, they're the worst free rims I've ever gotten. They didn't even come with free tires! Geesh.

:pimp:
I could've given you the 315's that came off of them, but I'm not that cruel! They've got great tread but they are so horribly made they don't balance and make you think they all slipped a belt, thanks Taiwan:rolleyes:

No, I didn't want crummy tires. And I had no room for them anyways. I put the four 16" rims and the five 15" rims and a bunch of other stuff in there and my tiny 2700-lb car turned into a sluggish 3800-lb car with hardly any passenger room (and GVWR is only 3600 on that model). I would have had to strap them to the roof to even make it slightly possible. Maybe next trip.

I bought a hydroboost unit for a 87 I believe. I got it from summit and it wasnt too expensive....want a link?

Also I made the socket as 78 said. I can loan that out if need be.

What was the price on that Summit unit? I'm seeing $100-$200 prices for reman units on Rockauto. I'm getting more and more skeptical of cheap parts store parts as my list of failed new parts continues to grow.
