The Green Grendel

Good progress! Both of us doing body work/painting within a weeks time. Must mean the end is near!

Yes. I'm putting heart and soul into this job, but my goal is still to sell the truck as soon as it's done.

Once you Burb, there's no going back to a Blazer. It is better in almost every way.

I know it's different but when I sold my Yukon and went to the bigger suburban. I had similar thoughts, and that's not even a couple feet difference.

Nice progress.

I have known that for a long time and I got rid of my k5 a long time ago and have 2 suburbans one waiting to be built.
But I fell upon this built k5 and since I have no time to build it was the only way I get back to wheeling.
Now I got the bug again and I will find the time to build the suburban

Yeah, in my case it has more to do with cramming 3 car seats into the back of a 2-door truck. It's just a pain compared to 4-door trucks. The extra cargo space is nice every so often. But the extra doors are a huger deal, on a much more regular basis.

I agree completely. My crew cab diesel rides so rough compared to my black and orange truck, but man it's so much more useful as a crew cab.

Oh, and my green paint arrived. I've sprayed 2 coats today, and I have just a little left over for touchup tomorrow (after it has fully cured).

I'm slightly nervous about tonight. I can put it in the barn, where it will attract dust. Or I can leave it outside, where it will receive dew fall. I stopped spraying at 3pm, and some spots are already dry to the touch. So maybe it's not a huge deal. :dunno:

Ok, here you go. It actually looks pretty good in pictures. The driver door has several lumpy layers of paint. Basically everywhere that got the red primer:

I blended them a bit, but I didn't grind it all down to a smooth base layer. So the new paint follows the contours of the old paint. And the bondo needed more sanding time. So this isn't as good as my previous paint jobs, but it's certainly better than this truck's previous paint job. And it's growing on me, over the last few days. I definitely need to clean up the glass so it matches the shiny bodywork. ;) :haha:

Pictures from this morning. Should have waited until the bright sun came out.

Otherwise, this side is much smoother than the other one.

I'm really liking the pickup tailgate. It's a big step up from the K5 gate.

Overall I'm happy with it.

@Blue85, the tailgate gave me no problems with fitment or latching. I bolted on the brackets and it worked fine. The left top corner is shoved slightly forward (thanks to the bend). But it had a lot less effect than we had predicted. There's a 3/8" gap between the tailgate and the liftgate. Basically the same as I had before. Except now it's just at that one corner instead of having a gap all the way across. I had worried about the liftgate not wanting to close all the way, but that has not been a problem so far.

And the latches worked fine, too. Win-win!

I think you'll love the DD duty. I'm not driving mine every day, but at least once or twice a week. It's those DD road miles that will build up the trust level in the rig and get your comfort up to stretch it's legs on some longer drives later.

Rob, this truck has performed flawlessly for almost 2 years of DD duty. I turn the key and it always does exactly what it should. But I've run into trouble all 4 times I've tried to take it out on a long wheeling trip.

1 - dumped in puddle. Not really the truck's fault, but I wound up flushing fluids and the oil sender bit the dust.
2 - failed fuel pump. Not a huge fix once I got it diagnosed, but getting the dead thing home was an ordeal.
3 - brakes were wonky, and the trip was aborted after 150 miles due to Chad's heap toasting an engine. I did get back in one piece, though. So props for that.
4 - crankshaft breaks. 'Nuff said.

So I don't know how to characterize this thing. It's in fine shape, it really is. I'd trust it driving across the country. And then it goes and pulls a stunt like that, 4 trips in a row. Weird.
