The Green Grendel

Fair enough!

And good for you keeping the 6.2 diesel alive in all your rigs!
That's cool! :waytogo:

Thanks! The 6.2 club is kinda lonely, but I like the engines a lot. I don't share the common complaints about power output, so for my needs they're just perfect. Though I wouldn't take my truck to the drag strip! :haha:

This truck got a lot cooler to me last summer, when we went to the Iola Vintage Military Show with @streetrodchev. A bunch of old military iron, including a few M1008s, but nobody brought an M1009. Hopefully I'll get to rectify that problem this year. :)

So this thing is an interesting piece of history. It has enough rust that it probably would have ended up in the crusher before too much longer. So I am saving this interesting piece of history. Hopefully it'll get on the road before too much longer. :)

Yup I like Big Block gas engines but Diesels for me rule!

Love our Duramaxes... would be very cool to have a Cummins powered rig...

I drove Diesel Landcruisers for years. You want to talk about under powered!
But it is just something you get used to, I would drive a diesel Cruiser again in a second if I could find one I could afford, been looking since I sold my last one 13 years ago!

I have never owned a 6.2 but my B.I.L has had and still has a bunch of 6.2 and 6.5 Trucks all sittin in death row!

I'll take a pic for ya. Give me a day or two.

Cool. Pics are always good. I agree with the Cummins thought. I would much rather have an inline engine than a V-anything. One of my friends has a 6BT-powered suburban, and he can reach any part of the engine with ease (in a 1994 truck that started out more cluttered than my rigs!). Replacing anything on the turbo side of a 6.5 is like pulling teeth in comparison. I would love to have that open, spacious access. Would make maintenance so much easier.

Though watching him drag race his 3/4-ton, I'm fairly confident that the 6BT is overkill for my purposes. I'd prefer to go with a 4BT. Supposed to produce good power *and* get better mileage than the 6.2 does. And the hood would only be half full. :haha:

Now if I could just find one that wasn't more expensive than my whole rig... :doah:

I never felt either of my 6.2L trucks were underpowered. However both were low geared. 4.56's in the M1008 and 3.73's in the K5.

I have 3.08:1 gearing in the K10 with a 700R4 and have never had a problem keeping up with traffic (though I've never taken it up to altitude, either). The 3.73:1 gearing in the Suburban feels like overkill for street driving (it also has a 700R4, but the T/C does not lockup). It hardly blinks when I hook up a trailer. And it starts screaming at modern highway speed. Fixing the lockup would help, but it still seems excessive. I do not understand why folks run 4.56 gears with non-O/D transmissions and then try to run 70MPH on the highway. :doah:

This truck is going to have 3.73 gears like the Suburban, with slightly larger tires. But the O/D gear in the NV4500 is deeper than the 700R4, so it will probably be about the same. I can live with it, but I think the truck would be happier with larger tires or 3.42 gears. :dunno:

I put 32's on the K5 and then 33's. It came stock with 29's and I bought it with worn 31's. Only with the 33's was I starting to wish for more gear.
The thing must have been a low speed tug boat with the 235/75R15's.

Big Ugly (the M1008) came to me with 36s and when I sold it had 38's on it. I lost some drivability with the 38's but they were very heavy.

That should be a good setup. Any idea what rpm's would be at 70mph?

With a little bit of math, I can tell you exactly what the engine speed should be at a given speed. I have a whole spreadsheet detailing different gear/tranny combinations. Here is the page for the combination I'm building for this truck:

I like math, in case you can't tell. :saweet:

That looks pretty good either way.

Yeah, I really have nothing to complain about. But I like the way Big Blue is geared. Yes, most would call it anemic, but it always keeps up with traffic, rarely downshifts, and cruising at 1600RPM with good mufflers is QUIET. :woot:

Plus, the Suburban has never gotten comparable mileage to Big Blue. I hafta think that gearing & T/C lockup have a bunch to do with that.

Well that's good to know. My current setup on my 6.5 gets me in the 2,100rpm range while doing 65mph. Once I get a trans that has OD, and some 285's it should really bring the rpms to a good range at 75mph.

I thought you already had a 4L80 in there... :dunno:

Based on the info from that thread, your chart looks like this:
