The holy grail: a running CUCV pickup...how rare and where to find?

Thanks.

Now to ask the silly question, how hard would it be to install a radio and speakers in one of these? I've changed them in other cars before but never installed one into a vehicle with nothing...and especially not a 12/24 volt system.

Wow almost $3k for an 09.......hope it was in good condition, cause I would have never paid that kind of coin for some 10 bolts, but thats just me. I got my m1008 for free...........kind of. Did some work on a house in exchange for said truck, its rust free to boot!!!.......for the radio, it woud be pretty simpe, just tap into the apropriate fuses on the fuse panel and your good to go, inside the cab everything is 12v even if it still has the quasi 24/12 system, I am doing power windows/locks/keyless entry on mine as we speak.

Dude, come north into the snow/salt/rust belt. A rust free, or even relatively rust free, truck is a rarity and commands a higher price. I could totally see paying that for a rust free K5. In fact I'd consider that a deal for a well running AND clean K5.

Thanks for the advice on the radio. The wife didn't like the idea of no radio...neither do I really.:tongue1: Mud tires and exhaust noise only keep you occupied for so long.

HAHA! Just sold my Ranger. Time to start working on getting that CUCV.:D

What sold me on the price I paid was an 86 on 14bff and D60 with bald swampers and a scary looking lift with blocks and the body rusted out so bad that the owner had pop riveted patch panels over the rust. This gem had a knocking 350 in it and he wanted $6900 because it was so well "built".

Yeah I forgot about the whole rust belt thing, hey you could always find a friend in your town with a trailer and truck that is willing to pick something up down south and haul it back for gas and food money or something along those lines.

Just put a down payment on a nice M1008 CUCV. 50,000 miles and came out of the Minnesota National Guard. Looks REAL nice.

Should be going after it next weekend. Nice scenic road trip across the UP and then across the bridge.

I asked and they said they fit...but they aren't an offroad shop by any means so I bet they'd rub like hell if you flexed it up. However it also looks like they're running them on on the stock rims...I think 16.5x6.25? The narrow rim and backspacing looks like it keeps the tires inside the wheel wells and away from the fenders.

All I care is I can get it home and go over 50mph. The guy says with the big tires they will do 70mph comfortably. Works for me...not that there's any 70mph road in the UP anyways.
After I get home and figure out if it will still fit in the garage I think a 2-3" lift is in it's future. Winter project perhaps?

I do 55 with mine and I have the stock tires. The engine is winding out too far for my comfort level. With a choice of gears or tires, I think I'll go for larger tires since the install is so much easier :wink1: . I was looking at 35's to get the RPM's down, but might try to find some 36's to try out and see if they'll fit.

Yeah I've been looking at more civilized 36-37" radials and man, those HMMWV take offs are looking more and more like a deal. Unless these things drive me out of the cab on the ride back I can't see a reason to change them. Already got the tires, already got the rims...

So you bought a truck from alfaheaven.com? Awesome, you are going to love it. Their trucks are so nice. One of these days when my k5 is done and I have a good paying job im going to buy a truck from them.

By the way, Is it painted with the regular CARC paint or is it painted with that special radar absorbing paint? When I saw their trucks at the military show last year, they were all painted with this special radar absorbing paint. They had signs on them saying not to touch the paint, because I think the special paint absorbs the oils from your hands and leaves marks.

Oh that would be the easy way to do it...'cuz I own a semi already:deal::haha:

Yep, bought it from Alfa. None of the other places had any GM CUCV's or were particularily helpful...or friendly. Alfa's owner was a nice guy and explained everything to me. Hell, he's picking me up at the airport in Wausau next Friday.

It's regular CARC paint....don't think I'd want that special stuff anyways. Not like it could go fast enough to need it.:haha:

Wow, I just went to that site.. so you are paying $7500 for that truck? I think it's worth it because of how stout these trucks are but when i got my M1008, the nice ones were going for much less than that. maybe demand has just gone way up. granted they were not completely detailed out and painted like those are with humvee tires but wow. they've got a cucv dually on that site for $15,000! show quality CUCV's! lol http://alfaheaven.com/Military%20Section/TrkCvrPage.html

If you watch on govliquidation.com even the prices for "residue vehicle" 1008 are high. Some are over $4k and are missing lots of parts or have lots of damage.

Start looking for your next one...see what you find.

I'm happy with what I'm paying (thanks for broadcasting it by the way:rolleyes:) as it's a stout truck that's in better condition than virtually any other comparable GM out there. If I had more money I'd pick up a M1009 for the wife/dog/future kids.

Time to start saving...too bad there wasn't a CUCV Suburban.
