The holy grail: a running CUCV pickup...how rare and where to find?

Yeah, and he states repeatedly it won't run.

Like I said...I'll be driving mine home within minutes of paying them and signing the paperwork. How many of them on govliquidation or Ebay could you say the same for?
Yeah, I looked...I found none.

The newest of these is 20 years old. The government is starting to DRMO them simply because they're old...but also keeping them because they need them. So they're getting both worse in condition and rarer. Lucky us. Buy 'em when you find 'em guys.

AJM, remember you from ORC years back. A truck in that condition is worth that or more, it's amazing how quickly costs add up when you do the resto yourself. I'm about to pick up a SFA myself, it's a K20 gasser with a four speed, but it's a pretty clean AZ truck with no rust. Those CUCV's are incredible trucks, and the diesel should get pretty good mileage with the 36's.

Hey man, long time, no see...your posts...or something. I lurk on ORC every now and again, probably more now that I'll ge driving a Chevy a bit more often, and it isn't what it used to be.

Nice score. I still kick myself for not selling that IFS Blazer of mine and picking up some nice rust free old stuff out there. I coulda made some serious money and gotten better stuff to boot!

Considering how long it's taking me to get around to changing the diffs in my Tracker (and it uses 3rds) so I can get a lower gear ratio I wasn't looking for anymore projects. Between the wife, the house, job, full time school, etc there just wasn't the time to buy something that didn't run or needed work.
A friend of mine was given a retired local bus to steal the tall deck BBC out of it for his K5 in early August. 2 months later he's got the engine in the K5 and most of the stuff is working. Needs a new fuel pump to deal with the carb instead of TBI.
If it was me and my schedule...there'd be a bus sitting in the backyard...

Two dumb random questions before my trip on Friday:

A - How big's the gas tank on a M1008 CUCV?
and
2 - Do the CUCV's have cigarette lighters?
No radio and the speedo won't be accurate with the bigger tires so I'm thinking about powering a GPS and maybe a boom box off of the cigarette lighter if there is one. Oh yeah, and my cell phone drains in about 8 hours so that wouldn't hurt either...

I'm sure I'll have more questions.

I think the tank is 20 or 21 gallons, and my 1008 doesnt have a cig lighter so I wouldnt count on it. It would be pretty easy to rig one up though.

Dammit, figures. Oh well, I can probably just pick up some extra AA's before I leave the land of cheese.

Thanks for the info. What's the cruising range of one of these, about 400 miles? Mine will have bigger tires to overcome the 4.56 gears...somewhat.

Someone had installed a cigarette lighter in the factory location on mine before I bought it. It's a simple one wire hook-up to the fuse box. Might be worth picking one up before you head out to get the truck.

The saddle tanks on my 80 are around 20 and 21 gallons each. With the bigger tires and the diesel, I'd imagine you'll see 15+ MPG if you keep the speeds down, even with the 4.56's. At 55 you may even nudge 20 MPG. For the cig lighter, you could always rig something up. For tunes, you'll probably be better off with headphones, those rigs are pretty loud to hear a boombox in. I think you'll figure out fairly quickly how far off the speedo is once you get moving. How long of a drive you got? Have you been to www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ yet? They've got those 6.2's running pretty good over there, even without turbos.

I haven't gotten to the 62-65- page yet but my computer just took a crap on me this weekend. Wonderful timing. Scamming access at school now. I will spend time there soon though.

There's the trip. About 400 miles in 10 hours. I'm going to see if I want to do it in one trip or stay the night somewhere and get home Saturday afternoon. We'll see. It's a shame my wife can't go as the colors should be very pretty up there.
There's virtually NO roads in the UP with the speed limit above 55mph. US2 is ALL 55mph as far as I know and that will be the majority of my trip.

I think I might go dig out my old CD discman...think I still have it somewhere around here. That might just work.

After the crappy weekend and crappy day at work today I CAN'T WAIT for Friday to get here.

Count on 15 mpg, and if it gets better than that it's a bonus. Even at 55 mph it'll be turning about 2500 rpm with those 36's. I squeaked 16.3 mpg out of mine on 39.5" TSL's at an average speed of 65 mph. Also turning about 2600 rpm, much worse aerodynamics and more wind resistance due to the extra 10 mph.

BTW, that is a very sweet M1008!!!   I would have paid that money for that truck too!

Dumb question Part III:

Do these things have manual hubs, drive flanges, or auto hubs?

For the life of me I can't remember what the CUCV's we had in the Marines were equiped with and I can't tell by the pictures on their website.

Cool. Thanks. I'm really excited about this thing.

Even 15mpg wouldn't be bad, that's what my Ranger got.

I bought one off of govlick a while back, ran and drove:D . Yes; lucky me, when I drove it back to NC it got around 18 with the crappy little tires and 60mph on the speedo. **the mileage was taken off of the odometer on the cucv*** Granted the motor was screaming, but it ran great, I hated to get rid of it.

If you want an excellent CUCV, Alpha Heaven is the one all other's are measured by.

They know what they are doing and they've been around awhile.

For anything you need or want to know, or guys to brag to about your purchase, check out Steel Soldiers .com.

Considering the Blazers also had 4.56 gears and also have 36" tires, I would venture to say that you'll be getting a bit better mileage than everyone thinks... The Blazers on 36s get 27MPG hiway and 20MPG city... so I would say the M1008 would get about 22MPG hiway and 18MPG or so in the city.

the miltary blazers had 3.08 gears and i think 31's, maby your thinking about the hummer with the 36 inch tires

Yup, 3.08's in the '09s. With 36's this puts cruise rpm at 1900 rpm which is why they manage 25-27 on the highway. The '08 with 4.56's will be turning 2500 at the same speed which will drastically reduce mpg.

very interesting... thanks for correcting me.. =)

now, how the hell can I get 27MPG out of my 6.5TD?? I cruise at 1800RPM at 55, and I'm averaging 18MPG for the whole tank, city and highway driving. That's 265/75r16s, 3.42 gears and a 4L80E trans by the way...
