I've been watching his stuff on YouTube recently and he's really informative. He really breaks down a lot of the science of motor oil and honestly, has about sold me on Valvoline whole-sale for everything I need.

It's Lake Speed Jr BTW. Apparently he did a lot of the formulation work for Joe Gibbs' house brand oils and race engines.

I’ve been watching his videos as well. Joe Gibbs Racing oil is now Driven Oil. He helped developed the blend that has knocked my Porsche from 3,500 miles of oil consumption per quart to almost 5,000 miles before half a quart is used. DT40 is pricey at around $18 per quart, but a lot cheaper than a $15,000 re-sleeve and rebuild. Or paying someone over $25K to do it for me.

I haven’t quite figured out what oil to use on my older flat tappet gas engines though. Mobile 1 Classic is a top contender. But, his arguments for the Valvoline is starting to win me over.

From everything he's been saying, the SM grade oils were the ones killing the flat tappet cams. The SP and upcoming SQ grades are safe for flat tappet cams. They reformulated with different additives to correct for the issue and maintain the low Zinc (phosphorus) concentration.

I want to try the Valvoline cleaning oil in my wife's Malibu and see if it will un-stick the rings and cut oil consumption in it. His video on that was extremely interesting in how well it worked in their test engines.

We just put that in my son's car and I'm curious to see if we notice any changes.

I picked up the Valvoline Protect & Restore for the wife's car today. Plan to get it changed tomorrow and see if it'll start cleaning up the poor old 2.5L.

If you have stuck gummed oil control rings, pull the plugs 2 table spoons of Marvel Mystery oil turn over by hand slowly a few times let sit over night. Next day With plugs still removed and a cloth or similar over plug holes crank engine to remove excess MM oil. Install plugs, add 1 pint MM to crank case oil take for a good drive try afor a few miles of low, and high speed driving. Even a ring break in drive would be ok.
Change oil use the valvoline or any good oil

For my 355 Vette, the 461 in the Iron Maiden, and the 225 Buick in the Jeepster Commando I use Valvoline full sythetic or same from Napa as Valvoline makes it for Napa, 10w-30 and then add 12oz of this every oil change…

I am sure SM oil was killing flat tappets, myself I drew the line at Sl and up. Kommiefornia outlawed SB-SJ, if has that on the label you can't sell it in Kommiefornia. Take a look at newer labeled VR1 oils and there is no API rating so they can sell it in Kommiefornia.

Is it bad my spell check will correct to Kommiefornia ?
