The new Garage

I'm tired of working in my tiny 2 car garage so I'm finally building a big (30'x60') shop to work in.
Since it's getting close to being done (hopefully in the next few weeks) I started looking at garage door openers. The Liftmaster jackshaft style openers really caught my attention, but there's mixed reviews out there. Does anyone here have experience with jackshaft openers?

I was looking at either the Liftmaster 8500W or the Liftmaster 8900, the only thing is even after talking to Liftmaster support I'm not sure there's actually a difference between the two models. I already have a Chamberlain garage door opener with the MyQ smart home junk on it and either of these would work with that.

Late to the party here, but I run the LiftMaster jack shaft openers in my garage. I’m amazed at how quiet they are when running. Nice surprise.

Perhaps the complaints online are people using them in commercial applications? The installation manual for mine says no more than 10 open/close cycles per hour. The duty cycle of the residential openers is not going to let you constantly open and close your doors without eventual damage...

That said. I love mine. No more ugly overhead motors/rails in the way of my high open ceilings and they hide discreetly in the corners of my shop

Which model did you use?

That's the one I was looking at, although the specs say it's not strong enough for my doors. It says it's only good for a 14' tall door, an 18' wide door or a door with 180sqft total area. Mine will be 14x14 or 196sq feet.

I may just buy one off of Amazon and try it anyways. I know they have bigger ones, but I want the one that I can control with my phone, I already have one of those on my other garage and it comes in handy.

More progress! Today they taped all the joints, pretty lame as far as progress goes, but at least it's something. I think they're going to finish the drywall and get the base coat of stucco on by the end of the week though!

They did a second coat of mud on the drywall tape, and they got the base stucco coat on one wall, hooray progress!

I know when they did my house, they waited 30 days before they did the top tinted synthetic coat, so I'm assuming that will be the same thing here. Hopefully I can get started on some of the interior stuff before they're "done", otherwise it's going to be pretty hot here by the time I get to work on anything.

We wait 4-7 days up here between brown cost and finish coat for stucco. They just need to let the free water out of the brown coat.

Looks nice, makes me envious

Hopefully you're right on that. I'm sick of having to work around the construction project. My motorhome is at one friends house, my car hauler trailer is at another and the Sonoma is at a 3rd friends house... I have the Silverado and camping trailer parked in my front yard because I can't get around the scaffolding, all the construction workers are used to working on new construction so they park wherever they want and block my entire driveway, there's a dumpster in the tiny parking area I have on the street in front of my house etc. etc.

The end is in sight though, crossing my fingers I'll be able to start working on it/in it mid April.

LOL, construction issues are universal, you sound like each of our remodel owners in the last parts of the project. To make it sound a bit better, try doing all that with 4' of white shit on the ground that is now rapidly turning to 6" of mud for the next month.

It's great coming home and seeing progress every day again! Another coat of drywall mud and another wall coated with stucco!

Seeing the stucco dry gives a better idea of what it will look like when it matches the rest of the house.

I was so excited with the progress I ordered lights, garage door openers and a drywall gun today!

Shop looks great.

I also run a lift master 8500 to clear my personal lift in the 3rd bay of my home garage. It’s a standard door 8’ tall.

My new shop will get three lift masters 12x12 insulated doors.

Have a friend that has 2 loftmasters on his building, his doors are 14/16ft tall equally as wide.

Nice! I finally managed to get to talk to someone knowledgeable on the Liftmaster support chat. They said I would be fine with the 8500W.

They also confirmed that the Liftmaster 8500W, 8900W and the Chamberlain RJ020 are all the same unit, they just come with different options.

The stucco base coat is done! The stucco guys said they'd be back next week to do the top coat, so that's good. I'm glad I don't have to wait 30 days again like the last guy wanted to do.

I'm not sure if they're done with the drywall yet, I hope not because it's not very smooth. I'll have to talk to the GC about that.

With the synthetic stucco it's just a base coat then a top coat.

Editing this because I just realised you were talking about the drywall. It's had 3 coats, but it's not sanded and there's going to be divots on some of the screw holes (only one coat on those).

I don't plan on doing texture, just going to leave it smooth.

DOORS! One step closer to being a garage instead of a carport! Today they replaced the back door on my house and installed the man door on the garage.

I'm hoping everything is done by mid-April, but we'll see. I can't wait to start wiring it up and moving stuff in.

Screw holes should have had three coats too. Check your bid or ask the general, sanding might have been an extra.

Around here it seems most garages are firetaped just enough to meet fire code. That's what I did. Semigloss bright white paint I barely notice the ( super obvious) tape job
