The NEW TIPS AN TRICKS THREAD

It takes a little bit of practice to learn the right amount of starter fluid to use. I have used it several times to seat my swampers on 16.5 rims. Me and my brother used a little too much one time and blew the tire off the rim. It made such a boom we had every dog in the neighborhood barking and several people came out of there houses to see what happened.

Another good one is the use a old contact cleaner solution bottle for cleaner (like degreasers).

No, the RPM will go up. Something like water will cause it to stumble. Even windshield washer fluid will cause the RPM to go up.
Yeah, I had a vacuum leak (many leaks really) on an old Chevy Luv and I sprayed wd40 on it and rpms went up.

Easy Off oven cleaner is a wonderful degreaser for axles, t-cases, etc.

A long flat screw driver with the last 1.5"~2" bent at a 45* angle is great for knocking out spindle bearings.

ether + tires == BOOOM!!

We use starting fluid to seat the beads on tractor trailer and backhoe/loader tires all the time!--though it CAN be very dangerous!!--especially on old dry rotted passenger car tires!--we blew some to nuggets at the junkyard more than once--its best to spray the ether in first, then stand back a safe distance and throw a burning rag or newpaper at it..it can make such a loud explosion,it will set off car alarms 50ft away if you use too much--and it CAN blow the tires right off the rim,or even crack the rim!--I've seen both... :eek1: :eek1:

Another trick I thought was slick is using an old bicycle inner tube for a radiator tester!--cut it in half, clamp it on the hose outlets, and inflate to 15 psi!...any leaks show right up fast!... :D

If you lack a torch, but have an arc welder, you can use it to heat and loosen rusted bolts by taking the carbon rods out of an old "D" cell battery(you need 2 of them),and put them in the electrode holder and the ground clamp, and touch them to the nut (use gloves to avoid electrocution!)..the nut will glow red hot after 4-5 seconds, and it will come off easily..

You can also soak some 6011 welding rods in water for 5-10 minites, and turn up the amperage to 150-200 amps, and you can cut a 1" bolt like butter!--an air hose aimed at the "cut" while cutting it will help blow away the molten metal..its like a hillbilly plasma cutter!..crude,but effective!..

I saw a guy use 2 tractor trailer tires and rims for an air tank in his shop--got a good compressor, but the tank was rusted out!--he hung the 2 tires on the wall, and drilled and tapped the rims to 1/4" pipe thread, and coupled them together with a peice of air hose..he set the air regulator at 125 psi,to avoid popping the tires...been 15 years, and they still work fine!..

Another "eye popper" was when I saw a jeep that snapped a leaf spring shackle in a mud pit not far from me..the guy used his jumper cables with a 6011 welding rod to weld it back together! :eek1: --to my suprise,it looked just like it was done with an arc welder!..I'd reccomend using a separate battery(or 2 in series) that are not hooked to the altenator while welding,to avoid damage to the altenator..but it didn't hurt his jeep at all!

Another summer tip--carb cleaner makes the best wasp and hornet killer known to mankind!---add a cigarrette lighter, and you have an instant flamethrower(but its very dangerous!)..I had to "burn out" a nest wasps built in my engine hoist yesterday--dam things nearly got me! :eek1: :eek1: It also works as starting fluid for stubborn lawnmowers..

no i think he is right, it will kinda choke on it
im pretty close to positive i am right
just think about it, its like giving the engine more fuel, this would cause the rpm's to rise slightly
i copied this from hotrod.com:
Other tricks include shooting aerosol carb cleaner around the suspect gaskets while the engine is running. When the carb cleaner hits the leak, engine rpm usually increases, thus pinpointing the source.

I've actually done this. Its fun, but not a great idea. We used a long lighter and the tire snapped the end off when it reseated. :eek1:

Starter fluid to set a tire is AWESOME!!!!! I enjoy it very much. Be careful not to loose your eyebrows though :haha:

Takes a try or two to get the amount right. I usually hold a lighter and use the can spray to light the tire from a distance. Not the brightest thing but it works.

And windshield washer fluid will in fact increase RPM when you spray it on a leak, its main ingredient is usually alcohol. I used it once to try and put out a fire, learned the hard way what the main ingredient is.
