so this has been a little project i have been working on and then on hold as i got frustrated last fall and let it sit till this past week .

here end use will be for farm / woods / field use on my buddys 97 acres of land . so its built for off-road use only . no lights / suspension / or other things needed for road use .

1 used rusty / beat up / broken sub frame / ripped off LR hinge / frozen lower tailgate dogs / 10ft dump bed from a k3500 99-06 body style truck . the shop that had this installed a whole new dump bed and was ready to scrap this out . i scored it for less than the price of the working pump unit if you purchased one new .

the newer dump box's are a formed heavy tin box for the main rails and they hold crap / water / junk and rust out bad at the back end with no drain holes . so this let the hinge tear off 1 day when they were dumping a load of scrap metal from there shop .

here she is as i drug it home on a rollback when i was still towing .

next step was 2 - 20ft sticks of 4" C-channel the heaviest for the 4" size .

next was layout a new frame for this old girl's new life she will be living .

i made the frame the same size as the old sub frame but MUCH stronger than there original crap design .

cut and notched the crossmembers to set in the frame main rails . and the main tongue is 3.5" 1/4" wall pipe from a scrap haul job i did .

next was a save from the junk yard dana 70 std duty drw axle from a old ford motor home that got scrapped out . i cut the center section out and used some 4" sch-40 pipe to connect them together for a dummy axle . next i cut the flanges off the full floater shafts to make caps . then i installed freeze plugs to seal the hubs from the tube . i filled the hubs with a little extra gear oil and capped them off . i also backed the brakes all the way off so they don't hang up and freeze up . and don't cry for this axle she was 3.54 gear open and nasty oil from high miles .

next was the test fit before i cut out the rest of the old sub frame scrap . all lined up good and looks right .

i pulled the sub frame and set her down . finished out the tongue and set the pump up there for now .

friend gave me a nice trailer jack someone forgot to crank up and rolled the drw combo right off the bottom of it . i took off the rest and whipped up a foot from a scrap chuck of the C-channel and used a beefy tube to act as a axle tube threw the bolt holes were the wheels use to be .

next was cut out the 3.5" tube and jamb un a chunk of 2.5" square tube to give me a 2" reciver inside . then i welded this all solid and drilled the hole threw for the pin . next i took a old hitch and a chunk of another i had and made a tractor style setup for the pin to hook to the tractor of his . if we use it behind his off road truck up there its got a pintle hitch . so we will swap it for the 2" reciver D-ring setup . this also acts as a good anti-theft system .

next we rounded up some 1" bolts to be the new rear hinge pins . then we used some scrap ruffstuff DOM from a HD tie rod kit for the main sleeves . then i went over to my buddys house and we machined some 1" holes and 1.5" holes in the parts i had . then i fired up the plasma and cut a 1.5" hole in the ends of the C-channel . next i set them all up and burned them in good for the new hinge combo . i even put greese fittings in . . . :D

ya few welds have porosity as i forgot the fan behind me was blowing my mig shielding gas away to fast on me . oh well its a off-road farm/land trailer .

next step was i reused 2 lintel units a friend gave me from re-modeling a building they took 2 big doors out and blocked them in . they were 10ft each . i cut them down to 6ft and set the dump bed on them and cleaned up were they hit on the inside and stitch welded every 2" with a 1" long weld for them to stay on . also i butted them up to the lift point were its welded to the bed of the dump and butt welded them together . so there now 1 long beefy unit each side . i then squared up the bed to the trailer frame and burned them in place to the hinges . i still need to trim the extra off the end yet . and a test lift to make sure it moves . i also welded in some gusset at the ends after i cut them off . figure good thing to do with all the flex and pressure at the back end .

here you can see the beat-up and bent mini truck toolbox i scored cheep . then i fixed it and made it work again in 15 min time and set it on the frame and marked the point's i wanted to use to bolt it down . i took and drilled 4 holes and tapped them to 3/8" and used 4 BEEFY big washers and secured it to the frame . next was set in the pump and cut 2 holes in the back for the hoses to come up & in to hook up . i had to get 2 45* fittings to make it work correctly . i bolted this down on rubber and BEEFY big washers on the bottom side with 3/8" bolts like it was before on the old sub frame except my rubber mounts . i even did a rubber pad for the tank to be supported in the middle and end section . i used 2 MED DUTY truck battery's i had from a take out that were still o.k. and hooked them up with 4ga wire . the controller was m.i.a so i used a extra new female plug for a ramsey winch and extra controller . this worked good both being 3 wire units . this also gets in-cab control of the dump so you don't need to get out to dump the load .

then we test dumped under her own system and she went right up no problems . and after i used the shop lift to secure it up and a extra 6ft chunk of angle iron for a 3rd support so i can line up and secure the lift unit to the trailer frame mounting pads i welded in when i built the frame .

sunday i need to burn in the lift mount yet / bolt down the 2 battery's / cut the extra off the ends of the new rails at the tail gate / and give her a once over with the grease gun and she is done .

the tongue is tied all the way from the front to the 2 main rails point to the first crossmember to the axle center and fish mouthed and welded to the axle . so she is 1 rock solid pull point for sure .

i narrowed up the axle to keep it trail / woods friendly and not get hung up on anything much if at all possible .

there is ZERO suspension on this combo so its super low the way i built it out . with the side boards off the main side rails for the box are only 3ft 9" off the shop floor . she will be a good work trailer at this height .

more pics to come when dune and day light to get the good finished product pics .

well i got he lift section squared up in the frame and burned :weld: it in for good . then i hooked it up to the truck and hit the button i had to stop before it was maxed out as it was ready to shove a shop light up in to the shop attic at 12ft height .

Looks good Brent.
2 questions, why a dual wheels? Tandems pull easier.
And what's with the farmer hitch pin. That thing is going to slam around when you dump. Plus those pins aren't really made to go fast....
Plus from the way you make it sound living out there would you have any problems with legality?

guess i forgot to say it was built for off-road use only on 97 acres of woods and fields up at my buddys place . he wanted a good woods trailer for firewood / dirt moving / general land cleanup stuff .

drw axle was free and figured for off-road use it will work . no suspension on this old girl she is solid just tires . the hitch pin is for the john deere tractor and the backwards 2" reciver setup is for pintal ring for the next item to be built for the land in the coming weeks or so . . . stay tunned for that build .

as to getting it there i stuck my 3 flashing led lights on the tailgate / went no more than 30mph / and got it there tonight . we are going to have a BIG bon fire soon

That makes sense. If your going to pull it with a tractor, I get it. Also it would be irrelevant how it pulls. Carry on.

also it was min purchase new build . only new parts was 3ft of 4" sch-40 pipe for axle center / 2 - 20ft C-channel lengths / 2 bolts / washers / lock nuts for hinge in rear . the rest was used cheep buy all the way to free stuff or left over scraps . we got around 1k bucks in this with my time building it . should last for years up there . i made sure to tuck the tires under the bed sides so if you rub a tree down the side it wont catch them .

Put the red dumper to work! Loaded it down with crushed concrete, pulled and dumped real well. Definitely could have loaded more but there was no need to push it
