If you run one of these boxes it can help boost spark energy if you use good components throughout the ignition system. It can help with some performance gains, slightly better mpgs, it helped keep my plugs cleaner. It helps the motor be a little more efficient through a more complete combustion. It helped my carb'ed truck out alot. If I run a carb again I will use MSD again. Now that I have fuel injection it is more efficient so I didn't keep the MSD with the EFI.

It'll work just fine with HEI.
wif you wanna save a lil money go for a mallory...thats what used to be in my race truck...never had a problem...if you buy a mallory dist it all plug and play minus power and such...if you dont use your glove box or care about how it look that is a great place to put an ignition...

do I need to buy a better coil and wires?
just thinking as I have enough money to buy it... but dont know if just dropping it in will give me better gains on my carbed truck without the other stuff...

I wouldn't swap coils unless yours is bad but I would change the wires if there is any question about the quality of yours. If yours are good quality wires then don't worry about them. I prefer to run at least an 8mm wire.

Blaster II or the Jacobs Magnum. We had a car on the Dyno that gained 4 HP just from putting the Jacobs coil on it. The Engine was no slouch either.

I've had the 6AL mounted under the hood for about 8 years now without a single problem. I have had the Burb up to the headlights in mud/water and the 6AL has handled it fine. It has even handled the pressure nozzle at the carwash after being covered in goo.
So....in other words.....I recommend the 6AL.

You'll want to at least verify the resistance of your existing wires.... MSD has a maximum spec for resistance/per foot for the wires.
Check each one with a DVM and see what the resistance is. If you have a wire with really high resistance, the MSD box will keep cranking up the juice to compensate and you end up burning up the center button and contacts of the dizzy cap.
I made my own MSD wires the first time, and one of the wires was improperly crimped (high resistance). I ruined a couple of caps until I figured out what was happening. I made up a new set of wires (and carefully ohm'ed each one) and haven't had problems since.
Having the more powerful MSD coil would be nice....it's not that expensive (compared to the box itself) and they are designed to work together, so it's less to worry about later on.
