The Un-Boring DD Volvo Wagon

It's been a lot of fun just doing small things and bolt ons to make it a really fun little car. Certainly not the fastest thing on the road but definitely fun. No problem laying the smack down on hopped up imports and I love the "wtf, did I just get bitch slapped by an old Volvo wagon?" look I get after. Get that same look when I drift it through a corner too.

Recently funny story, I came up to a light next to a Focus, no real challenge there. Road was a little wet from earlier rain. 2 lane that merges to one not long after the intersection so, in Mass that means "race to the death". Light goes green, I'm not really expecting a race but I hear his tires chirpchirpchirp off the line. "Challenge accepted". I lay it on and fly past him sideways with the wagon tail wagging behind me. He had no idea what he was up against.

But, today, progress on my cut n flip wheel project. Deep dish look and just about flush with the wheel openings. Only 3 more to go.

nice.

The power to weight ratio gives it the "fun factor"...

just ran across this thread, nice wagon and color combo:thumb:

I have a 91 940 Turbo as a DD and a 73 142 in the garage getting a motor rebuild.

Look forward to see the wheels, are you going to run some OE center caps?

Thanks!

Not sure if I'll do any center caps. Only because any of the old caps are unobtanium and I don't know how I'd attach them to these wheels anyway. Quick and dirty look, right?

Which old caps are hard to get? These 140/160 caps?

They use a center screw which threads into a little hub piece that slides behind the rim (I'll look for a pic or dig mine out). I can keep my eyes open for another set at the yards, I run across them every now and again.

In that case, I'd definitely be interested. Even if they're all beat up that would fit my car perfectly.

"At the yards" around here means you might be able to find stuff for cars less than 12 years old. I can't find RWD Volvo stuff in the yards around here. They're too old.

Playing around with some pic editing features on my phone. I like the first one.

just saw a set of four on ebay for $33 + $11 shipping :dunno: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-140-1...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c767b4106&vxp=mtr

I'll keep a look out, we have lots of rust free dead Volvo's in the yards to pick from.

I guess having the part that they attach to would be key. Could always make something, just not high on the priority list at the moment. When I get the wheels finished I will look into it a little more seriously. In the meantime, if you do come across a complete set and pick them up, I would buy them from you upwards of $50.00 plus shipping.

In post 39 I talked about having to pull the head off for a cylinder with low compression. After it went back together it ran good for a while but still wasn't right. It eventually got bad enough where it felt like it was running on 3 cylinders. Compression test as follows...

1. 180
2. 60
3. 180
4. 180

Put #2 at TDC and did a leakdown test this time (should've done this last time). Air blowing out the tailpipe, so much that it was enough to spin the turbo.

Still had my original head kicking around so I dropped it at a local machine shop for a once over and began pulling this head off.

Found this...

Bent valve best I can tell, may have happened when my crank pulley came loose and snapped the keyway off the crank timing gear, which was a long time ago. Evidently it got progressively worse and I kicked myself for not doing a simple check the last time I took the head off this car. These aren't interference engines so I never suspected a bent valve EXCEPT that I put a bigger cam in that may have made it an interference fit. :doah:

Back together now and running on all 4 cylinders which is real nice. It's been running like crap so long I forgot how nice it was.

Due for an update...

Found an IPD lower chassis brace. Cleaned it, painted and installed.
Also bought some factory bolt on frame stiffeners that they used on 960s but not the 740/940 cars. Not sure why they didn't install from factory, those made a noticeable difference.

I also removed that power robbing mech fan....

... and replaced it with a modified e-fan from a newer Volvo. Same type of fan I put in the K5, I just cut the shroud down to fit inside of the mech fan shroud.

Picked up an extra set of stock wheels with zero curb rash. Proceeded to clean them up, sand the scratches out, scuff, prime and paint them 2 tone.

I used Rustoleum black night metallic and silver metallic. Got some sick pimp sparkle in the sunlight.

And new tires for them.

And here they are on the car.

Looks good.

The 960 brackets definitely made a big difference on my car too.
