The "under destruction builds" supersize75k5 's driveway of despair and repair

isnt it amazing how little of the original truck is left once we really dig in and start modifying stuff.

All Thats original to mine is the body, frame, trans and transfercase. The trans and transfer case will be different shortly too.

That's nothin! Mine is down to original frame, bed and rear springs, Ask Shawn what happened to my cab............

Oh believe me... I havent even started yet. mines gonna be like the johnny cash song only the years will be a little off.

it was a 73,74,75,76,77,78,79... you get the point.

wow so like 1 hour and a half later of going through all these post... OMG what happened to the 2wd work truck?? lmao...

nice pics and videos to btw...

and i second that on your not to park anything 15' from my vehicles!!! jk man... and wanted to be the 3,526,215 person to say your crazy.. and your build looks awesome.. at times :)

Finally put some time into the new tie rod. The old one was 120 wall 1 3/4 inch over 1.5" 180 wall dom and it was bent to hell.. So time for something shawn rated!

1 1/4 QA1 hiems and 2 inch 250 wall dom tube:pimp:

Drilled out the knuckes to 3/4"

Inserted a 5/8" ID and 3/4" OD dom sleeve

then welded up the sleave and ground the top side smooth, then reamed out the inside for burs.

Measured the tow, inserted the hiems and welded it up.

After that simply bolted it on and welded on two new tabs for my hydro assist.. BAM.. Beefy tie rod.:D

Any input on this? Think I should make it double sheer ???? Think I should cut down the sleeve and use a shorter bolt???

Nice.

THe tie rod looks beefy, but the end single shear setup makes me nervous too.

How far was the centerline of the old tie rod with TRE's on it from the top mating surface on the knuckle?

If its more than about 1/4" higher, i'd be nervous of the extra twisting force on the end of that knuckle.

The old one measured out to be 56.5 and this one is the same center to center.

The sleeve should add some beef but Im leaning on the cautious/curious side here.

I can say I will certainly be finding out.. I need to get some input from people that have done similar or check out some other set ups.

My concern is breaking a knuckle on a landing or at high speed off road:crazy:

For the way you drive i would double sheer it, at the very least , i think ballistic makes them, add a heavier washer to the top of the hiem so if it fails it wont come all the way off. I see you have one on there know but the diameter looks small in the pic.

I have seen double sheer mounts that use long bolts from the steering arms through the tie rod but unsure if your's are lined up.

Can you make a reducer for the hiem and take out the mis alignment/ reducers as there is no angle movement in the tie rod, that would allow for a much shorter bolt.

I like I like:waytogo:

Thanks for the input ill look into that, should not be hard to find or just make.

how close does the tie-rod come from the diff cover at full turn?
Could make a plate that comes from top of knuckle at the kingpin cap and come down to double shear it pretty easy. Could probably do out of 1/4 stuff and good gussets and make a huge difference in strength.
I am going full hydro this winter and plan on using the WFO arms. Theirs are setup for proper steering geometry and throw for a 8" SE ram and are threaded so your bolt tightens into the arm then a jam nut on bottom.

Wasn't talking about the TR legnth, i was talking about the TR centerline to knuckle mounting height. Like, to decide if it was putting more or the same amount of torque on that part of the knuckle.
