the way i set stock hyd cams is usually running, back off till they clack then tighten till it goes away then one turn more.

on big nasty cams or rollers i bump the engine over till the the intake opens then just starts to close, then i check/adjust the exhaust, then i bump it till the exhaust just starts to crack open and check/adjust the intake. i do it one cyl at a time, probably not the fastest way, but depending on the cam profile its the sure way to know the lifter is on the flat side of the lobe and not partially on the ramp.
