hey everyone, so i have a tough one or I'm just mechanically stupid which is a possibility

i have a 1993 chevy cheyenne with the 4.3L v6 in it and for the life of me i cant get it to start. It sputters like it wants to start but only when your pumping the gas but as soon as you release the gas it dies

So anybody with some decent advice would be appreciated, hell I'll even take moronic answers at this point:haha:

no i haven't i just recently moved so i'm lacking all my tools and i really don't like buying stuff i already own if you know what i mean but i also dont want this truck sitting around either so i guess i'll go pick up a gauge tomorrow

Spark is something you can check real easy, and its not a totally reliable test, but see if the injectors are even spitting fuel, atleast you can see if your getting something

I know that the injectors are getting fuel, i looked down the barrels and i can see them spraying, i checked for spark but not on all the cylinders so i'll do that tomorrow

Spray alittle ether down the intake, see if and how it fires up, that should give you a good idea as to where to start. If it starts and runs for a few seconds, you have a decent spark at least.

Almost sounds like timing may be out? if it sounds like it wants to start? spitting somewhat? any backfires through the intake?

i've sprayed starting fluid down it it and it did fire up for a few seconds which is why i didn't check the rest of the cylinders for spark, i replaced the cap and rotor because i thought that might be but didn't work and yes i did put the wires on correctly, i had a lot of back fire out of the intake so it could be timing

it supposedly ran before it sat for 3 years so the first thing i did was a basic tune up, drop the tank and cleaned it out and put fresh gas in it

Sounds like timing to me as well. Distributor could be loose or something down below now in correct if they pulled it. Get tdc and see if the rotor is pointing at number 1 plug on cap.

x2

I had one of these I replaced a cap and rotor on and somehow installed the rotor 180* off. It even went on just fine but it was spitting and firing when I tried to start it. Must have spent an hour checking and double checking the firing order till I put it at TDC and pulled the cap and figured out what I did. :doah:

alright thanks for the input guys, but now i think i have a whole bigger issue, my room mate decided to "help me" figure it out and i think he dropped a valve :eek1: not sure how he managed to do it but he is now funding my project because of this. So to say the least i was not happy when i got home today

lol i wish!!! but if he was paying for all that then it would be going straight to the k5 :D but he's now paying for all my gaskets, any head work that needs to be done, ohh and i just might tell him he's buying me new valves, rockers, springs..you know the essentials :waytogo:

according to him he kept spraying starting fluid in it and cranking it hoping it would start :doah:it sounded like a gun going off in the garage which is what woke me up, thought someone got shot

i'm just guessing it was a valve since i dont know what else could've made that sound

yeah he's a dumbass i know, at least he's good for the money

really? well i'll check the distributor tomorrow, right now i've almost have the valve covers off, way to much work involved to get them off if you ask me

Valve can't drop unless the keeper let loose. Detonation could bend or burn a valve. You would have to pull plugs and check inside cylinder for broken pieces and if not good time to check compression. That'll tell you if the valves have a sealing problem and if the rings are still good.
