TheCaptain's (Re)Build Thread

Hey all,

Sorry it took me this long to get back on here again...the job has been taking it's toll on me lately.

As for the color, yeah...I've liked that one ever since the first time I saw it. It's kind of classic, but kind of modern at the same time. My brother has an S10 with the exact same paint on it, so I had a pretty good idea of what it would look like. If anyone else wants to use it on their K5, I say go for it...but I might be biased. :D

All of the exterior stuff will hopefully be painted this month. Most of what is done right now is just the interior stuff.

Another thing I am going to have to figure something out for is the badges and emblems. The originals would look a little beat if you hold them up against new paint. I'm not quite sure what I want to do there yet. I might be able to get them re-chromed a bit (or alot) nicer than they came from the factory. Some nice new enamel would look good in them for the colored parts.

I'd really like to find a rollbar for it too. The factory rollbar is nice just for originality, but I've heard they aren't really all that strong and the looks are nothing special. I liked the look or the one that smittybilt USED to make for these, but it's not available anymore for me to even consider it. (I called them about it - it's been discontinued.) I'm probably going to have to get something made for it, unless someone out there has any other good ideas?

Sure...I believe it's U9792 - "Indigo Blue Metallic". The guys at the paint store can look it up for you too, if you want to double check it. I got mine from PPG.

There are a few other car companies that have colors called the same name, but you can find tons of pictures of it on various Chevy trucks.

It lightens up a bit in the sun...it's looks a bit dark in most of my pictures.

Really like your choice for the color, I am thinking of painting my Sub factory two-tone blue and silver and may have to use the color you are using. Looks like your taking your time and doing everything right. Keep up the good work!!!

Hey! Thanks for checking in. Yeah...it's still moving right along. Progress is slow but steady.

I decided awhile back that I was going to use a Vintage Air AC setup...all of the stuff for that is installed on the firewall now. The beginnings of the wiring harness installation are underway too.

I also decided to upgrade from my old standard truck mirrors to the 'D49' optional version. I know a few Blazers on here have them..Artzner is one of them. They are chromed, so it should look better against the newer metallic paint. I found a real GM set of them too, so they should look nice all polished up on there.

The next big goals are to get the inner workings of the doors and tailgate installed. I'm not sure if my old windshield is going to polish up very well...it's pretty hazy after all of those years of being out in the elements. Hopefully most of the original glass will clean up nicely though.

After things get mostly reassembled, I'm probably going to set it aside for a bit to build up finances for the axles and powertrain. I've ended up spending more time and money on the frame and body than I had ever planned...but I wanted to do everything as right as I could. I had originally planned to just put a small block crate motor in it when it was done, but the way everything else is on there I'm thinking it's going to take a big block to do the whole thing justice. That is going to make the power train get a bit pricey, so this thing will probably still be a work in progress for awhile.

I'll try to post some new pictures yet this weekend. I'm really happy with the paint color...it looks ridiculously nice all fully polished up.

Thanks for the update, we are definitely (at least "I" am) interested in your progress as you are doing wonderful work there. I have the 73 and your work is an inspiration to get mine done right.

Did you say pics? Polished?:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:

Now I await new pics of gorgeousness! :D

Cheers!

Rufus

Subscribed. Really nice job. I have a basket case '75 Jimmy 2 hours east of you. If you don't mind, I'd like to get a look at yours in person someday- need some hints on how my puzzle is supposed to go back together. My PO makes your PO look like a rocket scientist.

any progress?, hows is it coming !

Great job man! Damn I need to learn to paint my truck.

He's still working on it, He asked me for some pictures and measurements from my Blazer about a month ago. I'm sure he'll post up soon, at least by springtime. Right Jeremy? :D

Yeah...guess I owe everyone some replies. I've been kinda lame about keeping in touch on here.

Thanks again for the measurements on the mirrors, Craig. The chrome mirrors were definitely the way to go.

Progress is pretty slow, and for a lot of reasons. I actually spend the vast majority of my time in Austin TX these days. I took a good job down here awhile back, which is a good move career wise, but my truck is still back in PA. It lives at the shop that did the insanely nice paint and body work. Once everything else is about as close to done as we can get it (without the engine, etc.), I'm going to store it elsewhere for a while so I can build up the resources to do everything right with the axles and drive train.

Anyways...it's not even close to done yet, but it's getting there. :D
