While not 100% a technical need (for once), I just thought I would share something I found that totally amazed me (I'm sure most of y'all already knew it).

While pulling the gages, I found something that I can honestly say I had never seen before: a factory mechanical oil pressure gage.

Loved that it was mechanical, but to say that it was unexpected would be an understatement. Just thought I would "share" as it was new to me and, to me, it shows the quality that GM used to put into their vehicles back when they were actually not programmed for planned obsolescence.

Pretty sure that was standard -- both my '74's and my '77 had that, nothing weird in it. Presumably the electric ones were later, think my '90 was set up that way.

Pretty sure the mechanical gauge stopped in 1975, at least the 76 blazer I once owned was factory an electric gauge.

As far as "quality", I've never seen a factory one but I have seen many after markets that leaked at some point in the copper tube. Usually due to vibrations and then oils in the cab. I was always taught rule of thumb is, no fluid filled mechanical gauges should be in the cab.

I bought a 350 out of a 77 that had the mechanical gauge.

I also agree with no fluid filled mech. gauges. Far too easy to put electric gauges in, with a much cleaner install, with dow downfalls later.
