Thinking about buying a k5

i have been looking for a good amount of time at getting another k5 but this time i want a full convertable and i found one for sale but guy said make a offer on it and i am not sure what to make a offer of and can anyone tell me how bad it looks from the pictures of how bad the rust is, how hard it would be to fix it what price would i be looking at to get it fixed i have never done any body work before so not sure if i would be any good at it or not i do not want to do any bondo ....i love working on stuff and tinkering on stuff and i have allways wanted a project car/k5 i had a k5 i was about to do a good amount of work on with motor and some other small stuff but not much of body work......please any help or advise or things to look at/ have pictures emailed to me would be very helpful also how much should i offer

but i all this is description guy emailed me i havnt went to go look at it because it is 2 1/2 hr away its a 1972

The blazer starts up, but there is no gas tank and the back part of the blazer is rusted, the front end is decent the plus on this is the interior is in good shape it is original we originally got it to place in the jimmy, the body on the jimmy is in good shape I have redone some work on it. The motor in the blazer is original with air. I will send more pics on both. I am getting rid of them cause I just don't have the time to do them and I want to get them out of my way. Take a look make me an offer and we'll go from there if your interested. Thanks for looking.Let me know if you don't get the pics.

I can't see the pics, but I can tell you from my experience...it depends on what your goal is for the truck...if you are looking to restore, then rust would be a big deal...as I can attest, restoring one of these gets very expensive and that's with me doing the work myself and all the new tools I have had to buy....and I bought one in maybe 95% clean shape.

If you intend to "cut it" or modify it, it might not cost as much as restoring...but it really all comes down to what you expect for the end result.

I can fix most stuff mechanically, but I cannot for the life of me do body work...I suck at it.

By the time I have my project completed, I am guessing that I will have at least $12,000 dollars in it...and my metal is all straight and rust free except for a little superficial on the inside bed rails.

That said, I wouldn't trade it for $60,000 brand new Tahoe...I wouldn't trade it for anything...

No need to apologize , we were all noobs at some point :D. Where at in MD are you ? I tried the link, couldn't view the pics. Rust repair sucks, plain and simple, for every bit of it you can see there will be 3 times as much that you can't. As having owned 8 K5's over the years, 7 being local rigs I can tell you firsthand what may seem like a basic small repair can turn into a major PITA when it comes to rust, that is assuming you want it done right.

One thing I have found is don't be in a rush to buy a truck just because you want one. Take your time and search CL. far and wide, There are plenty of good decent trucks to be had if your willing to wait and look. I bought mine 2 states away and although it took me about 4 months and cost me around 300 in fuel and a trailer it still was cheaper then buying something that needed major repairs. Invest in a good strong magnet and run it over the body panels to check for bondo repairs. Also remember that most body repairs take a little bondo, Bondo is alright in moderation.

this is so true. I traded off my tundra so i could get a mpg car and a project 4x4. looked around a few days and thought of the snow coming and bought a k5 for 3000. rusted out bad, needed bearings all around, having issues with motor, needed tires right away, and I wanted a burb anyway. most of these things i seen when i looked at it. but I thoght it was a good deal. then i start seeing em all over in better condition for less. and find a sweet 91 burb with perfect body and great interior for less than i got into my k5 and tires. now i'm stuck with the blaze and cant afford to get the burb.
 
if i get another k5 i will not take it 4 wheelen goal is to have a nice clean looking k5 with 4" lift and 35s something that looks very nice has a nice paint job and a nice interior that i can take top off and just drive.... i want something that looks very nice and is reliable(not going to be daily driver just weekend car) i would either rebuild motor or get a crate motor or put a 6.0 vorteck in it. i want it to be able to go for a 6 hr drive to no where and not have to worry about it

and i look at pictures and dont know what is up with the doors

Did you read the buyers guide? Personally I would want to see pics underneath. Frame, wheel wells, cab.

What is your budget?

I bought a rusty K5 and for how much money and time it would have taken to fix it I found it was cheaper and smarter to buy one from CA and pay to have it shipped out here!

I would never buy one that needed rust repair, unless it was surface rust on the fenders, etc.
 
The rocker panels look to be completely gone...wonder how much more rust is lurking under it???
 
How much are they asking?

My personal opinion is that it is a great truck for somebody that has the shop and knowledge of how to cut and weld sheet metal...
Unless you are wealthy, you will buy this and then you will quickly see the mountain of money that it will take to restore it...and since you haven't seen the underside you don't even know if the frame is good.

I hate to say it, but the best thing to look for is one that somebody else has already paid to have the sheet metal done. It's still going to cost an enormous amount of money to restore...

That said, I would like to have the wheels and seats....and those metal rails on the top of the bed rails.

Look around first...have patience...It took me about 4 months to find a full vert 1974 and I was only looking for a '73 or '74...I specifically wanted one of those two years so that made it even harder.
It costs about $1200 to get one shipped from the Southwest to the East coast, but $1200 paid up front for rust-free is worth $12000 in rust repair.

It could be a good candidate for the right price.
If it were a newer K5 I would say walk away because they are all over but the 1st gen are few and far between in this condition inside, it means the guy took care of it but the outside can't be helped much in rust belt.
Check more into it, but it's not to be dimissed.

For a local first gen it is not as bad as I was expecting, interior is very nice looking, like others said you need to see under side pics , wheel well pics etc. Better yet go and see it in person.

Bel Air, that's right down the street, I'm out in Pylesville right off of 543, if you ever need a hand let me know, I right up the road.
 
I also want to say that photos ALWAYS make it look better than in person. I have noticed that photos hide a lot of stuff...and make the paint look better than it really is...they can even hide malformities in the metal...my truck looks a lot "newer" in photos than it does in real life.
