Getting to the point where I might need another set of wheels so I can do some much needed modifications to the blazer. Been on the fence between something nice and newer or something cheap. Has to be fun to drive though. Just looking for some thoughts/idears.

...Or just make due and fix the truck quick as possible and keep driving it.. hmmm.

I'm thinking that a suspension upgrade might be in order. Maybe the gearing (only 3.42s) Fix the power windows, finish the interior with new trim, dashpad and a newer split bench seat. Maybe even a decent speaker system if time/money permits.

I got my Tracker and don't regret it. Keeps the miles off The Blazer and it out of the winter ****. I basically paid cash for it so I don't have payments and it's new enough that I'm not too worried about it's reliability or anything yet.

Although the previous owner's hackjob exhaust modifications have been problematic...:doah:

Not a bad plan, I'll keep a look out for one or something similar. Seems to be a lot of used vehicles out there for sale. Something like that should be around 3K or so? I'll see what I can find.

I wouldn't mind a toyota truck/suv either for a decent price (under 5K). I used to have a hilux surf imported from Japan, but I was tight for cash then (painted the blazer) so I sold it for 10K. It was nice.. '94 with like 45K miles on it. 3.0 diesel with an auto. A 5-spd would have been more fun though

Yep. Find a 4cyl 4x4 truck (pretty much limits you to the imports but hey...not a bad selection) and you can DD the whee out of it for years probably.

of course when I start looking I find something like this :doah:

Offer him $3500?? :doah: lol

Nice looking truck but honestly I'd go newer. I took a hard look at a second, more beater, diesel K5 or M1009 but finally decided to spend my money on something newer and hopefully less maintenance requiring vehicle.

The key is to find something small and good on gas, saving you as much $ as possible to put into your K5. A basic 2wd, reg cab, no frills, 4 cyl, 5 spd S10 would be about perfect. Can throw parts in the back too.

No worries about where I live its going to be summer soon hopefully.. right?:doah::haha:

I used to drive an 86 2WD S15 light blue extended cab. Was my parent's. I ran that thing into the ground (was in highschool at the time) but I loved that truck. 5spd manual but it had that 2.6 litre V6 with no power and crappy fuel economy. Canada's east coast also killed it with all the salt. The box literally bounced off the frame every time you hit a bump.:haha:Was a nice truck though in its day, and was actually pretty good in the snow believe it or not. I'd buy another one (with the 4cyl) if it was in good shape.

Colorado/Canyon?

Kinda thinkin about a newer chevy/gmc but something small like a colorado. :doah:

It would be the 2.9L four banger with the front factory split bench. Ext cab for a bit more room. (not the I5, heard they are crappy on fuel, might as well get a fullsize then!)

They look like decent vehicles and if I look around a bit, probably could be had for a decent price. We'll see

Frankly I haven't heard much good about them. Shawn had one and destroyed it. He'd destroy anything but I remember him not being impressed with them. We have discussed them here before.

I'd go for a Ranger first but you can't get one in 4x4 with a 4cyl since the mid 90's.

hmm interesting. honestly I don't think 4x4 is absolutely essential, its going to be summer soon and I'd have the K5 for the winter. The studded 31" winter tires I ran this winter were awesome so I'll stick with what works. I may not even keep this vehicle once the blazer is done.

so i guess a 2wd beater would do. something i could flip would be ideal.

I thought the point was to keep the restored, semi-classic, rust prone and increasingly scarce K5 out of the winter?

You should be able to find a nice mid 90s pickup / SUV for under 5k. They are comfortable and reliable, one of my all time favourite trucks was my old 96 K1500 4.3L V6 / 5 speed manual truck. Totally base model, manual windows / locks, vinyl floor etc. Only thing I ever did to that truck was swap a new transmission in while putting on over 180k. I bought it for $6500 and sold it for $5000 three years later to boot! I used to get 22mpg highway with that truck all day long, and it was actually lots of fun to drive too! I wouldn't discount those little Vortec V6s as an option for a daily driver, they are dirt cheap now too.

:doah:no, plan is to continue restoration and rust prevention and start some modifications, so that I can make it more comfortable/fun to drive. I'm hoping that yearly rust prevention and maintenance will allow me to use the K5 as my everyday driver... once I get it there.

But I'm at the point where I have to take the doors apart to mess with wiring. New interior and possibly suspension upgrades. So I won't be able to drive it during that time.

Good deal. I'll keep that in mind. The other thing that I am considering is importing another vehicle from Japan. But this time something that is a little more desirable/easier to flip down the road (no pun intended :doah:).

i just did a used vehicle inspection at work on a 00' ranger 2wd, 2.5l 4cyl, 5spd. blue book was only 3k and it had under 80k on it. if it was possible to fit both my boys in it, i would have gotten it. that 2.5 is pretty peppy, and even though its a ford, i know it would be reliable.

i hate fords and all, but not a bad idea. i would roll a ranger over an s10 any day. s10's are junk.

ya that reg cab '83 6.2 truck you put up there is a 1500$ truck TOPS. 3500 is ubsurd for that truck.

You know my feeling on DDing your K5 in the salty, snowy winter up there. Another decade and you'll be rebuilding it again. Find a winter DD and save the nice old truck for the better weather.
