really i used to have one when i was 16...i was thinking a s10 with a 2.2...i have heard bad things about the 2.5 even though thats the body style i like..

I am loyal. Gotta be an S-10 / S-15.
The 2.5 I had in a Fiero was still going strong at 242k when I parted ways with her. Best motor I have ever owned as far as reliability.

I've had an S10, which never gave me many problems, but I was good to it. Still needed a water pump, alternator, balljoints, etc; basic stuff though, nothing catastrophic. The T5 tranny did start having some synchro problems though, and it was getting pretty hard to shift, with 160K, which was kinda dissappointing.
On the other hand, I had a Datsun that I maintained poorly, and beat the snot out of it for 8 years. I think I replaced a $8 clutch slave once, one headlamp, and probably a battery. Sold it to a buddy just cause I didn't need a 2wd anymore. Still going strong. I've got another Nissan now, even more impressive. I've got to tell you, they're just superior to chevy stuff in the way that they're built. As much as I hate to admit it, they're more reliable. I'm telling you, I did EVERYTHING to this truck, from the reckless ages of 14-22. Jumped it (forward and backward), rallied it, overloaded it, wheeled it, mudded it, rock crawled (with speed to compensate for traction), and anything else you can think of. It just refused to give up.

I used to have an s10 2.5. Awesome little motor. The 2.8 is the one to stay away from IMHO.

ah i see its the 2.8

I had a 93 2.8 5 speed, had about 300k when I sold it. Its still going, lady at work husband has it now. I ran it once for about 40 miles with very little oil.:o Filled it up and she was good for another 50k until I found time to change it.

yeah i really like the nissan hardbodies...i know they are built well because they never loose value..
Yeah, that's true. Picking one up for cheap is the hard part. I just got a 93 pathfinder in super nice shape from a insurance auction though, and I got pretty lucky. It's one sweet little truck, a LOT nicer than the S10 I was driving. Here's some features they put in...

Power windows
Power mirrors
Sunroof
Factory alarm /w remote
Electronically adjustable shocks
4 wheel disk breaks
31x10.50 stock tire size
Factory alloy rims
Air conditioning (that works!)
Two factory speaker amps, that sound GREAT with a nice deck and speakers
A LOT more power than the S10 I had
Better mileage than the S10 I had
Limited slip diff that still works
Rear wiper /w washer
Clutch interlock disabler

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but the list goes on. Got it with 284K on it, and it does better in all ways than the S10 with 160K did. I'm not bashing the S10 at all, I picked it up super cheap and got more than my moneys worth out of it. I'm just saying that this thing is a lot better, and I'm just impressed with the way everything is made in it. Really quality. Drives and runs super smooth, handles great, looks nicer, more comfortable, lots of amenities. The amazing part is that EVERYTHING works. It's like having a new car, no quirks what so ever. Oh yeah, did I mention I paid $700? :D I wonder how hard it would be to SFA the thing...

That's pretty amazing. I'd consider yourself pretty lucky. My friend has been rebuilding 2.8's since the 80's. He was always raggin on me for having 160K on mine, and the oil pressure was starting to drop. According to him and all the others at his engine shop, they regularly go 150k, but rarely make it to 200k. He's rebuilt more of them than he can count. He can hardly remember rebuilding Nissan 3.0's though, probably just a handful he says. We figure the rigs they're in probably just end up wrecked or beat up and sent to yards before the motor goes. I know it's gotta sound biased, but I swear, I really am a Chevy guy.
One thing I will say for the S10, the chassis, suspension, steering, etc will take a LOT of abuse. Undercarriage is darn near bullet proof too.

what kind of gas mileage do you get in the pathfinder??i get 250 a month for gas and i drive about 70 miles a day so i need great mileage..

20 mpg in the pathy from a 3.0L, and it has more power than it needs. I got about 17-18 from the S10 with the 2.8, and it was VERY lacking on power, compared to the pathy. It felt like a 4cyl, but it was a V6.:o Oh yeah, the S10 paint was complete trash too. Typical GM paint peel, followed by rust. The nissan's got a pretty deep gloss still. A 2wd nissan pickup with a 4 banger would get upper 20's though. I had 28mpg with the 81 datsun that was carbed with a Z22, and I never kept it tuned up like I should have. So a fuel injected one should be better.

70mi * 30 days = 2100 mi per month

$250 / $3.50 per gal = 71 gallons of gas per month

2100 mi / 71 gal = 31 mpg

So you need 31 mpg, and that's if gas is $3.50 and you drive 70 miles EVERY day. I'm guessing that that's more of a M-F schedule so you might save on the weekends, and gas might be less expensive than that depending on location. So you might be alright with upper 20's.

IMO I'd go with either a Hardbody or a Yota. I don't have anything against any others but those would probably be my top 2. My dad has a Ranger and from what I understand he gets pretty good milage with it and IMO its fun as hell to drive (4 banger and manual trans) but I've only driven it a few times due to living in a different state and when he comes out he and my step-mom come in her car. His old Ranger was fun too with the 4.0 in it but to me it sucked having the auto in it but I tend to like compacts with manual trannys. My moms Taco is defeniately fun too 3.4 with auto I think she gets decent milage as well. when I was looking around at trucks when I got mine the other 2 that I most likely would have gotten after my C-10 was either an extended cab Hardbody or extended cab S-10. I tend not to be much of a brand specific person tho

I have a 96 toy 2wd that I dd and with the 3.4 ltr v6, it has plenty of power and averages 29 mpg, and even dips well into the 30 mpg range while cruising 60-65 on the freeway. My dad also has a little isuzu pup truck with the 4cyl/5spd, thing was not a speed demon, but it was the most reliable truck ever. Always started, upper 30s mileage, lasted forever, and we definitely beat on it, hauled stuff we shouldnt have, bottomed it out with too much weight, that truck was awesome. There is also a diesel engine that came in the pup trucks that I hear can get mid 40s mpg wise. That or an older toyota would be my choice, although my bud did have an older nissan we put through the gauntlet on a regular basis.

I had a 85 yota 2WD with the 22r and really beat on that truck, I mean beat it hard. Never killed it myself, some lady rear ended it on I66 and the insurance paid for the truck, actually made a few bucks when it was all said and done. The Nissans are tough but the one I owned had alot of electrical issues and so did a friend of mines newer Nissan. S-10 fourbangers and a five speed are pretty good too, and can be had cheap, but you really have to rev em out to get anywhere, so don't get one w/ high mileage.
