Ok, i knew that doing this post would attract a lot of people who absolutely hate the H2. I will preface this with this is just a thought running through my head. I am not just about to buy it, but I am seriously contemplating it. I don't know how many of you all check out ebay on an occasional basis, but due to the increased gas prices, soccer mommies can't afford to pay for the gas in there mall crawling H2s any more. This really affected the resale value of these vehicles. They are selling as low as 12 grand. I was going to wait for the prices to come down a little more to around 9 grand, which if gas jumps again, wont necessarily be far out of the question.
I currently own a 75 k5 with 1/2 ton axles locked front and rear, so i have to be pretty careful with the right foot, a mild 350 and 38 inch tsl radials. And it seems like i am ALWAYS fixing it. I will literally fix one thing and then the next thing goes wrong. Now it is starting to leak from the rear main seal and is starting to smoke from the right cylinder bank. This takes a lot of the appeal of driving it around on the weekends, but it is still a very decent truck for the trails and the occasional mud pit. I know that is to be expected with a vehicle of this age, but it still is not any fun. Regardless, I love the truck and I plan on keeping it regardless of the hummer.
My question is if i were to get the hummer i would level it and put some coil spring spacers on the back to make room for either some 37x13 inch boggers or some 37x12 sts radials or irok radials on either the stock wheels powder coated black or some pro comp rock crawler wheels with the faux beadlock if i kept the pos bfg a/ts as street tires. I would also to modify the steering with an idler pivot kit and and a pitman idler system from cognito. I would also put the fabtech tie rods and perhaps a new center link. And last but not least paint the truck flat black. (I HAAATTTTEEEEE chrome on off road trucks.) I would also cut the exhaust to the axle and put a cut out on it for starters, and maybe a programmer, true exhaust with headers, an intake, and the bolt on list goes on and on.
I was wondering if any of you have either personally wheeled a H2, know anyone that does, or seen them wheel anywhere but a field with a puddle in it. I can’t find any blogs on them. I need a strait forward opinion because either everyone hates them for being H2's and the fact they are essentially a 3/4 ton tahoe, which I am still not convinced is a bad thing, or everyone loves them, and it is mostly the owners that love them. I would do the jeep thing, but jeeps are for _______ (you fill in the blank), while jeeps are very capable, they are a dime a dozen on the trail, and i have to hear the sound of a V8 while I am wheeling.
I am looking to have a truck I can drive to a place, wheel, then drive home, and not have to take a trailer. I like the fact that the body style will never change on them considering they are going to get the axe from GM relatively soon so it will never look like an outdated vehicle, the interior is NICE compared to whatever you wanted to do to a K5 or a jeep and i personally think they look pretty cool if they aren’t blinged out and if someone put some nice m/ts on it. This vehicle would be a weekend warrior whether it is cruising some on the weekend, or hitting the trails.
I know some of the positives to the trucks already, the 6.0 liter engine which is FUEL INJECTED!!! and reliable, something i have wanted on my blazer, but is so far down on the
list of things to do i won’t ever get around to it. They have 14 bolts, locker in the back, electric fans, something i also want to do, and a very strong power steering pump, my blazer's is in need of replacing soon.
The drawbacks that i know of is the hefty weight of the vehicle and most importantly, independant front suspension. Do i take my strait axle for granted on my blazer? Is it that much harder to wheel with the ifs? Is the 3/4 ton front suspension reliable with the above steering mods? Are they at all capable and am i dreaming that I could wheel it anywhere at all (remember i want to put some interco tires on it)? Do you think it is too wide for the trails, i know all of you have encountered a couple of trees on a trail meant for narrower vehicles which makes an easy part of a trail an off road expedition.
If you all could post a few of your thoughts that would be great!!! Thanks so much!!!

i would not buy it strictly because the ifs the size the weight and because i guarantee my 85 blazer gets better milage than that thing does thats just my opinion ifs sucks to wheel with you most definetly take your solid axle for granted

I say drop $3K into the K5 to make it more reliable...

We all get frustrated from time to time and it becomes easy to think newer is less hassle/better. Do the math first though and see what kind of improvements you can mke with just a few payments you'd otherwise be making on an H2.

I had my '81 Jimmy so reliable it was ridiculous. 5500 mile round trip at the drop of a hat with nothing more than a check of the oil. When something breaks more than once it needs upgrading. When upgrading do your research and shop around.

There is no reason a 20-30 year old K5 can't be as reliable as a new vehicle. They're so simple it's laughable.

The number one reason not to get an H2 is that you'll forever be fighting "perception" of the rest of the world when you drive it. It's a lose/lose proposition.... the majority of people will hate you for driving such an eco-irresponsible vehicle, or at the very least consider you a poseur for choosing an H2 as an "offroad" truck.

The serious wheelers will probably never respect it either. Sure it's a nice enough truck....maybe even a decent dual-purpose truck for light wheeling, but for the 9 to 12 grand you are looking to spend, you could certainly change the whole driving experience and reliability of your existing K5. Keep in mind, even the H2 is going to have issues (especially if you wheel it hard)....so the fact that you spend a lot of money on the acquistion costs of it, won't insulate you from the costs of an eventual solid axle swap or repairing damage to something else. Even newer cars/trucks have issues that need fixing.

Dollar for dollar, your existing K5 could be a much more capable offroad truck. If you are cautious not to spend every dollar on the offroad goodies, you could certainly add enough creature comforts along the way to make it a joy to drive on the street too....

ps. If the H2 would require you to take out a loan (do you REALLY want a loan in this economy? :yikes:) consider this important point..... whether you have the money or not, that Hummer payment is due EVERY month. If decide to fix the K5 and find yourself short of money for a month or two....you just don't put any money into it. None of us knows what the next 12 months of the economy will bring, so it's certainly prudent to avoid taking on new payments of any kind.

GM torsion bar IFS brings the suck...

Fixed it for ya. Others have done a MUCH better job than GM ever did with IFS.

I've driven an H2 and blah! For the money you could get a 6.0L powered K2500 pickup or Suburban that would do anything the H2 would do, get you less attention, have a better power to weight ratio, get better gas mileage, AND be more useful.
Hell, you might be able to get a Duramax or 8.1L powered truck.

here is what you could do..and maybe what i would do if I was to do it over..ah maybe

right now truck are work crap

2003 with decent miles, 4x4 and 6.0
you can get them here for 5-7k

ems, cage and a someone else sell a coil or coil over solid axle swap kit under 4 grand, add a couple grand for wheels/tires, 500 for steering, 1800 for the axle and rebuilding it, 300 for drive shaft mods, and couple hundred to get the exhaust in shape.

7k
4k
2k
500
1800
300
200

add another 1200-1500 for lockers and you are ready to start killing sheet metal.

if you had to finance this..then all bets are off and the K5 is hands down better choice. The k5 is some reguards is like a jeep..when your down and in the dumps the aftermarket has your back with a nice bolt on piece of eye candy.:D

going against the grain is one thing...you go to far and life starts to suck real quick

I've never driven any k5 or suburban that was anywhere near as nice as the H2

The 08's are as nice though

I wouldn't bother with it offroad, not really any good. All they are good for is a nice vehicle for the street

My 1987 K5 with 108,000 on it just did a 6,600 miles 22 day trip to Colorado, Nevada then up to Montana. It did a lot of back roads and unpaved trails with no problem. My rig by no means was a pampered rig. From the day she was born she was a State of North Dakota vehicle till 2003.

In the end it is your money and your choice if you want it do it!

We just had a H2 in here for a windshield and it was a rebuilder and didn't have a battery and we had to push it outside. What a tank! Five big guys pushing this thing and it was heavy, we could barely move it! Personally I would buy a newer K5 that's mint and prices are cheap right now because they are not fuel economy Toyota Echos.
