So over the winter, I took the PO's word on his maintenance regime and have put off doing the basic stuff (fluids and filters) until now. Is this how a fuel filter should look? I guess I should look at having the gas tank cleaned and coated?

You could replace a lot of fuel filters for the cost and time of repairing/replacing the tank. I say replace it and keep a spare or go to a real (much larger) fuel filter somewhere inline. The stock Q-jet filter is a frickin' joke.

Good point with the additional filter, I think I'll do that! Though my fuel guage isn't working so the tank might need to come down anyway...
