THIS color...

is what I want. Does anyone know what it's technical name might be, or it any factory colors are like this? I would really like to do this color gray on my truck, however it would need to be a spray can or roll on type of application. I don't care about my paint, it will get ruined, but I would like it all one color and easily "touchable" after a days bashin :waytogo:

the "name" of the color is pretty pointless without knowing who the paint manufacturer is.. when ya throw in 'fleet" options available from the paint companies, above and beyond car manufacturer colors the list gets long..

obviously many, will be somewhat close to each other..

gunmetal or charcoal are often used by manufacturers..

and ummm, don't plan on being able to touch up, "roll" a metallic paint on... ain't happening.... you want that kinda touch up capability, you'll need to go solid...

Rustoleum "Charcoal Gray" looks just like the color you want. Its just a little hard to find. Walmart and home depot are your best bets. You can roll it on or spray it and touch it up later easily. I just got all the stuff to roll my truck with rustoleum gloss white since its the easiest to find.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :D

I like that "dark machine gray" in the spray can too. Not sure how good that will look sprayed on though.
I THINK someone on her rolled it onto their truck a year or so ago. Good luck finding the post though.:doah:

Has anybody suggested "tractor paint"? Not sure if you could find a close color to what you want, but it's what a bunch of these southern boys are using around here for their trucks...I don't know much about it, but can find out. A buddy of mine sprayed a hardbody flat black with it and I know another guy that used red...never looked at it up close though, but if it's tractor paint it should be easy to touch up.
Rustoleum Professional pretty much is tractor paint.

I like that. But a grey JD? Seems sorta wrong.

On the finding Rustoleum part, I noticed if you go to their website and you look at a particular product type, then click on the "Find this product in stores" or whatever it says link it will show you ONLY stores in your area that carry THAT particular product line, not just Rustoleum products in general. I'm looking for a place near me that carries their Professional Line's oddball colors and seems like Lowe's only carries the common colors and will order the odd stuff but you have to get a 4 pack if you want the 1 gallon cans. $130 total...nope!
Gotta try some of the mom and pop paint shops now.

Is it possible to have someone shot this color and then can the extra for me to roll on later?
If the paint is designed to be sprayed it will not work with brush or roller. The chemistry is very specific for the catalyst and the oxygen to make it cure at the right rate. Plus I imagine catalyzed paint sitting on your roller as you work will form chunks and flakes to get stuck in the finish. You could try using way less than recommended activator to slow the process and adding some reducer, but chances are it would just be a mess.

I would avoid mixing colors to get your desired color unless you can find an even ratio that works - something like 1 pt jar of white to 1 quart jar of black. This way you have a chance to get it close later on when the touch ups are needed and your original mix is used up or dried up.

catalyzed "brushable" paint usually has a "spray" and "brush" hardener.. and yes, the "brushable" hardener is usually 1/2 the percentage as the spray version.... Alwgrip is a prime example...

you need a quality foam roller to do catalyzed paint, or as mentioned, it'll eat it up quick... we use rollers design for epoxy and polyester resin, that hold up better than anything else, but even they start to get funky after a while... noncatalyzed, rusto enamels, the roller quality isn't nearly as important, most hold up well..

and for the record.... if this is gonna spin-off into a "rolled and tipped rusto is sliced bread" kinda thing, once again, metallics will look like cr@p.. solids, sure, knock yourself out...

back when i worked for John Deere i used to love their "construction charcoal." hmm, wonder what a case of spray cans would cost me....

Ohhhh, got ya...and now that I think about it I'm pretty sure my buddy that sprayed his hardbody said it was the Rustoleum from Lowes....maybe...or I'm getting dementia at 27. Everybody else has just said tractor paint and I'm a base/clear guy, never even considered a single stage until now that I have something that I know will get beat on.

Seeing a JD non green does look a bit weird tho...didn't even look to see where you are from, but hope it's above the Mason/Dixon Line:haha: Does look like a cool restoration though:thumb:

WTF is that jd?? Doesnt look like it mows lawns very well lol or plows snow...

You guys don't have any Deere construction equipment out there? That's what I worked on when I worked for JD. Never touched an agricultural tractor in my life. But then again souther NV has more rock, dirt and concrete than wheat fields lol.

well yea, but that ain't no track hoe, it's like a lawn mower/golf cart hybrid...i still say it should be jd green to match the yellow seats:haha:

i need to get a pic of my uncle's old jd farm tractor, not positive on the year...but it has to be pre 70's...it's begging for a resto, but i'm no tractor guy so wouldn't know where to start.

I only posted that picture as a reference to the color, to show what it looks like in the real world. Since you're all asking about it, I dug around and found it again and found another picture in the poster's album. Tractor mystery solved!

I don't much care for the JD green and yellow theme, but I really dig the gray and yellow. Wish i could find it in stock here.

That just makes it worse...pulling the green/yellow we all know with grey/yellow...that's just wrong...the moon caps look good on it though, just needs to be green :haha:
