This could be a really dumb idea

Would it be crazy to gear my truck real tall so that I can use 2L on city streets and 4H on the highway? I've got a T350 and until I can swap out to a 700r4 I don't like to wrap out the engine on the highway. I know I'd be losing low range for crawling but I have my other blazer for that. Trying to keep the body straight on this 74.

I'm sure there are other reasons not to, but the main idea i can think of is gear change costs, and limits on gears that are produced for your axles.

It will cost you WAY more to put in new gears than to swap to a 700r4.

Hmmm I thought this was the cheap fix. Hadn't compared prices yet. Thats a really good point.

Gears aren't cheap, and neither is the install if you can't DIY.

Also, unless you already have a twin-sticked 205, you can't run 2wd low.

I wouldn't run a 205 in 4wd on the road, it's not meant to be used on the street for long periods. If you do this I'd suggest swapping to a 203 t-case, these were design for full time 4wd on the street and can be twin sticked to achieve 2lo.

What size tire do you have? Unless you have a larger than 33-ish tire even a 2.73 gear will be pretty low for 2lo driving.

Install the transfer case backwards to create a .50:1 overdrive....

The Hulk did that with a 203 rangebox to calm-down his 7.56 ratio Mog axles.

:usaflag:

I messed up. I have a 203. Full time with the part time conversion. So I can run two wheel low.

That's not exactly a quick, easy, or cheap band-aid to deal with gearing. Besides that I'm not even sure how practical it would be as you would have to stop along side the road and shift between high and low ranges all of the time.

Well I have to stop getting off the highway. So I could put it into 2H then. but its not sounding like a cheap alternative so its outta the mix for highway mpg improvement.
