So I have had a terrible time finding a dana 60 (see dana 60 curse). I have a line on this one. The guy is having sever kidney stones and this photo was the one sent by his wife. He has had the truck since it was new. It is 1 ton long bed. Has 35/12.5 16s... I have it for a good price, just want to make sure. He is older and his wife has no idea where a build code would be, but he seems to know his stuff well and the diff cover looks right...
What do you think:

Dana 44

Passenger drop Dana 60s have two studs in to the center section in place of the inner passenger side ubolt. In the future though, I would ask for a picture of the knuckle if you can. The kingpin knuckle is a dead giveaway with four hex bolts holding the top/bottom caps on where balljoints would normally be. The D44/D60 covers are pretty much identical except the 60 cover is obviously bigger, but without a soda can or something to give proportions, they are hard to identify in a picture.

Plus, any kingpin axle whether it is of GM or Dodge (although DRW requires new hubs for most people, housing is the same though) make is still a pretty desirable axle, and if you somehow totally missed that it was a drivers-side drop (Ford), they're actually worth more than the passenger drop axles anyway, and there's a lot more people out there looking for them (Jeeps, SAS-swaps on most makes of modern vehicles, etc).

The bearing cap on the bottom of the knuckle is also held on by four bolts, and the upper passenger kingpin cap looks almost identical to the steering arm side but is thinner and obviously doesn't have the steering arm.

If you look on the housing where I have it circled, there should be "60F" stamped into the housing. On the left side there should only be one U-bolt. I can't tell for sure but it looks like 2

How soon do you need one? I may have one for sale pretty soon, but there is a guy here in town who has a dozen or so in stock.

Let me know what you need.

That's a dana 44, ball joints would be an easy give away but four u-bolts is a chevy d44, a gm d60 would use a u-bolt and two studs on the passenger side.

A d44 and d60 cover look practically identical, other than size.

So the guy claims it is a 1973 Cheyenne 1 ton. Does the year have anything that would make it different? I have read and read and now everything is blurring in my mind. I asked him to take pics of the knuckles. I am going to be really bummed if it is not a 60. I already agreed to a price as long as I could confirm it was a 60...

If you need to come check out a 60 up close.I have one in my Crawler.Just down the road from ya.On Horizon circle.

But that first pic is a D44.

Great thread there! If you have any questions after reading that, you should not be working on your truck

Crap... So it is a no go... That sucks again. I am getting closer. I thought all 1 tons from 73-87 had 60s. So again I am back in the hunt. This sucks as it was a good price, $700 for everything. I am sorry for my ignorance. Like I said I have read and read and everything is just spinning in my head...

Sigh...

easiest and best way to tell the difference is that there is just one ubolt on the pass side of the pumpkin

That thread was the easiest and most concise info I have found. I now have everythinle... I need to know... As GI Joe Put it: Knowing is 1/2 the battle.

Like others have said , the dead giveaways are the 4 bolt rectangular plates over the king pins as opposed to ball joints, the absence of a u bolt on the inner diff side spring plate and the obvious "60F" cast onto the lower right ribbing of the housing :waytogo:

Good luck, you will find one sooner or later, I went to a local little junk yard the other weekend, looking for stuff for my brothers waggy, and I ended up find 2 Dana 60's :eek1: and even a few ford ball jointed 60's. Yes I took one 60 home, I had to, it was from an M1008 (army truck , 4.56's for $250 :woot:)

Dodge was the first open knuckle 60 with 1.5" 35 spline inners in 1975, Ford had a few open knuckle 60s in '76 crewcabs but they were 1.31 30 spline inners. Chevy/GMC didn't have open knuckle 60s till '77 and only in one tons.

Ford and Dodge have both used 60s in trucks as light as 3/4 tons, not so with Chevy/GMC.
