well if you look at the pics there are ladders going down into the crank case, so who know how many millions of quarts it takes. Oh and bear in mind that all those pics are the "little" ones, theyre only 10 and 12 cylinders...

While I was in the Navy I worked on engines similar to that. While checking for wear on on the cylinder walls I actually stood on top of the piston while wearing an ANTI-DUST suit /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

They start by rotating into a compression , Prime and llight it off. Probably use propane or either to prime the first couple bangs and it's running from there.
