Will an 85 sm465 from a 1/2 ton truck swap in place of my 87's sm465 no shafts problems or adapter troubles etc?

I need to know cause I have a guy with a good trans for $250.

Should be a direct swap, unless it has been changed to an older SM465 with a NP205.

As long as it has a NP208 or a NP241 it will work
The output shaft is 32 spline for NP208 & NP241

And you've also got the real late 465's with the different top (if they were swapped), but AFAIK that won't apply to the '85-87 range.

'85+ all use the round pattern adapter.

Ok I'm gonna pick it up and probably have it rebuilt and save myself on the labor of the whole swap. What should I pay for a rebuild or bearings and syncros?

Whats the swap for?

You can probably save yourself money and simply swap it in place as-is, unless you know it has problems. The 465 is a very robust transmission, my 1974 465 worked fine up until I ran it low on oil. (and still worked fine, just a slight whine) The '85 that replaced it so I could run the round pattern adapter 205, shifts and runs perfect.

heres a question.. can i use a 465 from a 208 and mate it too a 205? what is involved to do this?

Yes, the easiest way would be to find a complete set up from an 85-91 1 ton 4X4 or you will have to piece it together.
You will have to locate the correct adapter (85-91 1 Ton only) , locate a NP205 with the round adapter bolt pattern ,with the long 32 spline input .

good to know. i am getting a whole running truck for $300.00 . all i want is the trans.

Well as far as rebuilding it goes I know a few guys so if its only gonna be a hundred or 3 I'll do it to know its fresh. My truck is pretty close to completely loosing second gear... Hell maybe I'll buy a trans from work. Get the $200 cash for the core and just return the trans. The boss said its not against policy or anything to do that to cash in on the core.
