My opinion is that if you spend over $10k on a fullsize Chevy (assuming the initial cost isnt too terribly high) you have been paying too much for parts/labor along the way and/or redoing things so many times and losing money everytime you redo something. My suggestion is that people take a little more time and do it right the first time, instead of building a rig, deciding you dont like it, and tearing it down and starting over. Know what you want the rig to be like in the end and save up and get it there. In other words, if you know you want to run 40"+ tires someday and a D60, save up and do that, dont waste money on smaller axles and tires, then upgrade later losing money on what you have already done. On my trail rig, I spent $3000 initially, and I have put about $4-5000 of parts on it since then, and with that money I have spent it will have a doubler, histeer crossover, dana 60/70 with lockers, beadlock wheels and 42" TSLs. I have about another grand to spend and I will be done, so I should have around $10k in it when I am done and have a pretty good trail rig. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I know exactly what kind of rig I want. Not including the cost of the Blazer which was $5000 a couple of years ago for a CLEAN rig with no rust and no prior hacking , here is the breakdown. The rig is being built for general purpose driving and moderate offroading (no rocks).

Axles D60 and 14 bff $5000 Ready to install
Tires & wheels (36's) $1200
Motor $2000 New crate GM ready to install
Tranny $1000 Includes coolers and misc.
Drive shafts $300
Lift kit $900

I paid for the axles to be built because I could not find any shops in my area I felt comfortable with to do the work. It was alot of money but since I did not feel comfortable doing it myself, and wanted them to last I bought them ready to install. The rest was installed with some help from my wheeling buddies. Now I am looking into a T-Case swap to finish off the drivetrain. Then it is off to the body and interior. I am no ace mechanic, and I dont want to work on my rig everyday I am off, so I spend money on good parts. I also want to be able to get in my rig and take it to the beach or mountains with the family aboard and ride in a reliable comfortable truck. I /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif to you guys that can do I all yourself and save BIG money.
You want a police dog trained ? I can handle that with no problem. What me to build a rig with my bare hands /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

Not more than spending 10K???? Add $3K tires/wheels, 3K stereo, 1K for lift, 2K for the stock as a rock forest service blazer....and thats already 9k. Build a motor, tranny, tcase, different running gear, and drivelines....and say bye bye 10K. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

$5000 for a Unimog 404 with 41" tires, a DOM cage, portal axles and lockers and a 10k PTO winch....it might be old, but it gets the job done

Uh, I was talking about a trail rig, not a mall cruiser /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Mall cruiser? I didnt post anything about the locked-up Ford tow rig on 41's did I? I think you are getting the pavement pounder mixed up with the trail rig again..... /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

I wasnt replying to you /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

$800 for Blazer
$545 for 89 suburban (fuel injected 350 with tranny, oil and power steering coolers, like new interior, plus 700 r4 for my 71 stepside)

swapping as we speak, just took a break.
