the PO doesnt tighten the U-bolt nuts. Luckily I was just tooling around on my friends property! This was pretty much the first time I've driven the truck for more than 10 minutes since purchasing.

Ate the fender badly.

I tightened them back up, but the spring pack is badly skewed now. Parked it until I have time to fuss with it.

That's what my 10 bolt looked like after a 2014 camery pulled out in front of me

exactly why new to YOU stuff should be gone over front top / bottom and front / back before major drive time .

as a guy who works the tow truck biss lots of people are lucky in my area with poped ball joints and tie rods . most happen in drivewyas / parking lots / at stops . they get crazy scary @ speed tho .

I've seen that happen a bunch on the trail, loose u-bolts are common for rigs that see wheeling time. Definitely a maintenance part that needs to be checked often.

Have a girl friend who just finished a bad a$$ resto on her 56 bel air. Shop that did the suspension work didn't tighten the new rear u bolts. Axle sloped back and spun the pinion up through the gas tank and into the trunk. Took out both rear quarters. Nice little 20-25k mistake by some shop.

I need to get the pics......ugly.

almost same story on a 67-68 mustang I helped fix .

guy had big gears in rear / sticky tires / HUGE HP motor / 4 speed . . . . . . .

left keys in it and his friend had been drinking and wanted to do a burn out . . . . .

rev 5k rpm or so and side step clutch . . . but old school 4 speed was left -up for REVERSE :doah: NOT first :eek1:

snapped both center pins & slide leafs back on main leaf / spun pinion up and tore drive shaft apart / taged the rear qrt's just a hair / BLEW UP the old cast iron 4 speed :weapon9:guts and oil all over the ground .

when I redid the drive line I made a set of bigger / longer leaf spring perches to replace the trashed ones . new center pins for the springs & 1 size bigger ubolt dia for better clamping force / new drive shaft / new tremec 5 speed conversion kit :thumb: .

Scariest ride I had in a '67 Mustang was when a friend just biought a nice one--289 4 speed, cardinal red, mint body & interior...engine was hopped up and ran like a demon too...

We had stopped at a Cumberland Farms convenience store --I went in to get a few soda's and snacks while he filled the gas tank up--and he decided to check the oil--it didn't need any,so we took off, hopped on the interstate exit a few hundred feet up the street, and when we went to merge into heavy traffic,he floored it and banged thru the gears...

Just as the car got up to about 65 mph,the hood flew open, smashed the windshield, then was torn off and it flew into the ditch on the shoulder of the road next to the breakdown lane!..:yikes:..in a way we were lucky it came right off, otherwise the driver would have only been able to "guess" where we were headed,or what was in front of us--its a miracle he didn't panic and lose control!..(I think I sharted my pants too,and if I were the driver,I know I would have !)..

The car's hood had been modified to use hood pins, and he'd forgotten all about clipping the pins back in when he opened it to check the oil--another customer had walked over and started talking about his car and distracted him..the hinges of the hood ripped right out of the fenders, and the roof got bashed in where it hit when it flipped open...

That was an expensive "mistake" and could well have been a fatal one...a car behind us did a 360 and stopped in the dirt on the median strip, and at least 6 other cars came to a screeching halt when the hood flew off,and a semi came very close to rear ending some of them...:doah:...luckily no cops showed up and there was no damage or injuries to anyone or their vehicles,so we carried the hood into the bushes and left--had to come back in my pickup and grab it later that day...was pretty much scrap too..buckled to hell..
