dropped the gas tank yesterday, got ord's greasable bushings in the front and rear springs today. crawled under the truck with a grinder and an air chisel to work on getting the rear shackles off and damn is this gonna be tough. it's my first time doing a shackle flip, read a lot on here but anyone got any extra pointers? got all day tomorrow to work on it!
 
Grind the rivet off. Air chistle with the special poker will get it right out. You can also heat it, but its not my recommendation
 
get a skinny cut off wheel for a 4" grinder. Cut an X in the rivit, then hit with a cold chisel the head will pop right off then pound the rest through the frame, should be about 10 min per side.
 
thanks, i got both the poker and cut off wheels handy, i'll try em out tomorrow. ten minutes per side tho...shiiiaaat i'd be kickin a** and takin names then! took me the better part of an hour to gring off just a couple
 
If you have a air hammer put a chisel bit in and cut the heads off then put the punch in and pop it out. Should only take a few seconds per rivit.
 
one side is done and all bolted up. used the cutoff wheel to make a big gash in it and then the air chisel took the head right off. used the poker to punch it out. thanks for the tips made the job a lot easier! now back to work...

best damn tool i have ever purchased. i have the huge snap-on one. spared no expense. quick release chuck, a lot of bits, clutch fan tool.

i use it every day. its like a hammer but better.

I did the cross cut with a cut off wheel and cold chisel on mine...

Don't buy a cheap air chisel, they wont even make a dent...
 
looks funny, half block, half flip. felt good to get some stuff done on the truck tho

Are you running plain rubber fuel line through the frame with no protection.....?:eek1:
 
Am I the only one that cuts the rivets off with a torch? I have the biggest air chisel Snap On makes, a nice assortment of bits, a nice grinder, cut-off wheel, etc, but I still find the torch to be easier/faster.
 
the feul line is cracked in places and was gonna replace it, what do you recommend?


Me, I'm doing a F.I. swap, so I'll be using short sections of stainless covered rubber line, and hard line for the long runs along the frame.


Nothing wrong with rubber fuel line, just make sure it doesn't rub or chafe on anything, run it inside the frame so it doesn't snag on anything, and keep it away from heat sources, such as the exhaust...


if you must go through anything like the frame, use a grommet to prevent chafeing....


you can get a coil of stainless hard line from anywhere (3/8") to run along the frame and use rubber to connect to the tank and carb, allowing slack for body flex.

Thats what i was thinkin reading this post. i just hot wrenched all mine off. was way quick and easy.:whistle:
