So I was thinking about running an 8" sub instead of not at all. This will be accompanied by 4 6x9"s some kind of replacement's for the fronts, and all powered by an amp. What do you think of the Infinity reference series?

To get any kind of real low bass from an 8", it needs to be a serious speaker with serious power in a huge ported box. I don't think the infinities would fit the bill. I have mostly used 8's for mid bass. Upper spectrum midbass at that. The box that would be required for an 8 to sound deep would be larger than a box for a 10.

If space or mountability is your concern, you may want to look into the flat design 10 or 12. The 2-4" mounting depth is a big plus when space is limited.

I got an 8" in my truck just cause couldnt fit the box for a 10 or 12. It sounds pretty good, its an old sony xplod 8". Doesnt sound too bad, but I need to upgrade my stuff in the next year or so.

I've never ran an 8" for a sub either. I will be going to a 10" if i put one in my truck. I'd LOVE a 12" but it just won't fit

As others have said, an 8" isn't really worth it, especially in a truck application. Personally I'm a fan of 10's in sealed boxes. I think 12's (especially in ported boxes) can get too boomy. A pair of nice 10's in spec built boxes won't take a ton of power to sound good and they tend to stay nice and tight, but also low and smooth, even with rap or "base-ier" music. Don't get too hung up on brand names, just take care in spec'ing out the system...proper amount of power, ideal placement, etc.

A friend of mine had one of those bass "cannons" several years ago. As memory serves, it was loaded with an 8". It did alright, but the "cannon" (cabinet) was at least 20" long.

A 10" would be better, but I'm betting an 8" cannon would be better than none at all.

Oh Yeah:D. Back in high school we used to pick those bad boys up at the pawn shop and stuff them in everything from hondas to oldsmobiles. Bandpass boxes definitely give you more bass out of a little sub, but the bass response on those things is so horrible...they just make "boom". You won't get much tone, but they'll shake your windows.

Hmmm ok, I was just thinking of some ideas of what I'm going to get. Just looking for a unique setup that sounds great for what it is. Maybe 10's are what I need.

The cannon my friend had was actually pretty good as I recall... It was one of the bigger names, don't remember what though... Not Polk or anything, but not crap either.

8's hit harder than 10's...10's hit harder than 12's...so on and so forth. It had punch for sure, and did add some bottom end to the sound. Not earth-shaking or anything, but it was noticeable. I'd actually consider adding one (or two) if space was very limited.

IIRC, all the bandpass boxes I've ever heard sucked. I knew a dude with two 12's in a bandpass. Ugh... You know how it sounds when somebody with a "system" has rap cranked at ear-splitting volume, like 2 or 3 cars away from you in traffic? It sounded like that IN his truck.

Yeah, thats kinda why I am aiming for an 8. I dont want to have that "system" sound when its cranked up. I want it to sound like a movie theater or somthin on the inside. Not like a rap concert.

Do several 8s then. 8s are alot more punchy than the bigger brothers, in most cases. Many times I have thought about doing an all 8 vehicle. Like 20-30 of them. The snare drum would knock your sunglasses off.

If you could get some highly efficient 8s, mabey 4 of them, and mount 2 per side, I think it would sound alot bigger than they are.

Interesting, Id like to see a setup like this. Maybe Ill have to do that for myself just so I know.
