Thoughts on a 1974 Jimmy - UPDATE with MORE pics

The rear end is just a yoke, thats easy to fix.

New paint where they obviously painted over rust scares me alot. I am not from the rust belt so you guys are more used to it but that screams I have about 10 times this much rust you can't see

So if I'm replacing the yoke anyway, which is better, strap or U bolt style?

If its the factory size (I believe the axle was replaced with a used one) its a 1310 size correct?

u bolt is always better.

Oddly enough I don't know what prices are like out there but I have seen 14 b sf 6 lugs go for around a 100 bucks and a yoke would be 70 bucks give or take

Yeah, I absolutely see where you're going there and agree, but I can't take a 14 bolt with me and install it down there for the drive home. At least with a yoke I can reattach the rear drive shaft and address the safety concern of a 180 mile drive with a FWD K5. Might just have to eat that $70 as a worth while safety modification.

Run away!!! Especially since you said you're going to have to take a loan out to buy it... That thing will cost to a ton more money in the very near future. That truck isn't going anywhere anytime soon, there's not much of a market for them right now with gas prices being so high. Don't be blinded by the full vert and drive train, etc... That thing needs a ton of work, which is why they're selling it. I think they've realized they're in too deep on it already, an in my opinion your "low ball" offer was way too high to begin with.

You have no way to tow it home? Rent a trailer for a day?

nothing to tow with. my other car is a diesel jetta with 90 hp :haha:

also, its part of the arrangement, my parents are on board with my getting a new truck to replace the griz, as long as I can start driving it right away, and then I have a month to strip the griz of all its naughty bits before the carcass has to go. and that, on top of the feedback on here is why Im gonna pass on it and keep looking.

But I wont say its not killing me to do it :doah:

I think we ALL know and have been where you are. When you find something that's "close enough", it's REALLY easy to convince yourself that you want it.

Granted, I live in Kalifornia and I'm already torn about how much of my rockers to remove and I just have some pinholes through the rockers to deal with. What they just chose to paint over is scary, at best.

That combined with all the other "little" things that basically mean that you're either going to be tearing it COMPLETELY apart (frame rolls out from mine tomorrow so I know how it starts whether you want to believe it or not) or constantly trying to keep it patched together and running.

I would totally agree with everyone that for that much money you can find a nicer one, fly out to get it, and still be money ahead.

You can always paint the next Blazer's driveshafts like a barber pole and use whatever colors you want (flourescent orange and pink?)

Good luck and I know what it's like to try and find "the one" so I'm pulling for you.

Time to start looking out west for a rig.

Some of us are just itching for a roadtrip :D:D:D

Listen to what's being said here, that K5 is going to explode from rust soon
When U pull the top off i'll bet the cab will sag and doors will be hard to open /close. Been there. 1500 tops just because it drives.
Good luck, Craig

This sounds like it might be up your alley. It's in VA for less money too. And you can always do the full 'vert conversion later.

So what did you decide? Pass or purchase?
