I am potentially going to be purchasing a used 700r4 and tcase from across the country. its in Oregon Im in Texas. It is from a fellow CK5 er but still want to get thoughts on such a purchase?

Has anyone had really good experiences or really bad ones, is this kind of trust not advised?

thanks in advance

I'm surprised you can't find anything local. Is this a built 700? Is the Tcase a 208?

The CK5 community seems to be pretty 'tight knit'. I would trust a cross country purchase from another member here moreso than from ebay. I have purchased a couple things from different members here and both times were very positive experiences. Even, just recently, bought a used lock right from a member here that bought it from someone else but never used it himself. Turns out it was missing a part and he worked with me to get the replacement part to make it right.

Depending on your comfort level you could name (screen name) the seller here, someone else may have dealt with them before or can vouch for them.

and shipping costs on something of that weight isn't going to kill the deal?

I ask because I had thought about sending the transmission out of my Burb back to Phoenix from Indiana, and the shipping cost alone was just not worth it, of course that would have been a two way trip, but still... I could have nearly had it rebuilt again for that price.

just wondering.

Yeah, it had better be a hell of a buy, on a hell of a well built TH700R4 for it to be worth it. Not saying anything negative about the seller or the transaction, just the shipping charge.

If it's someone that's been around CK5 a while I'd (generally) take them at their word.

That being said, used automatic transmissions are the absolute highest-risk item to buy in this hobby/business IMO. You can't tell a darn thing about a trans by looking at it from the outside, and the number of miles on it or "shifted fine when pulled" don't necessarily mean a whole lot even if the guy is being honest.

I wouldnt' question buying from a long time member here, but i wouldnt' buy a used 700r4. If you are swapping to one, and don't have one to rebuild....buy a dead one and get it built.

I don't trust used autos.....from anyone.

thanks for replys

yea ive been on the fence about a used tranny

It is weird but I can't seem to find one around san antonio, Texas

been searching craigslist and even on the regional section here as well.

So since all you guys have been so helpful, if you happen to hear of a 700r4 that would bolt up to a 6.2L and a 208 t-case drop me a line especially if you know of one in this area. I'll keep looking and really appreciate all the advice. I don't have the money to make a mistake on a tranny, and just want my K5 back on the road. Thanks again,

Sergio:D

700r4 or 4l60 trannys are good or bad. skip the used its all good it works crap.

get a fresh reman and be done with it.

and unless you realy trust and 200% know the quality skip local shop for reman and go name brand major company . seen to many socalled reman shops do 500% trash work and suck at it.

hell i got paid 3 times to swap a used tranny in a vehicle . week later smoked. then pulled and thay remaned it. back in drove 1 week still not right. pulled again reman job again.

finaly worked this time. what a pain in the a$$ that was.

so what are some options

or i should say are there any?

what is the cheapest route to a fully functional tranny. I would much rather find something that will give me the best mileage possibly out of a stock 82 6.2L What are yalls thoughts? stick with a 700r4 it originally had.. keep the same kind it has now th350 or any other ideas? all are welcome. Budget is the biggest concern!!:frown1:

Our replies weren't meant to discourage you. There are plenty of folks who have bought and run used transmissions without problems. Hell, I've even got some for sale. You just need to be aware that auto transmissions are very high risk and their true health is virtually impossible to judge for the average person.

A 700R4 will definitely give you the best mileage out of a stock 6.2L for an auto. Otherwise, a 5- or 6-speed manual would be the ticket, but that conversion would cost a lot up front.

Wasn't it you that had asked me about this trans combo that Dustin (mr250twostroke) was selling? If so my buddy built that trans for him when he was down here and had issues with it and now it is top notch.

Dustin is an honest guy and you should have no issues buying from him.

yea thats me..

I havn't heard back from him in a while. I tried sending him a PM but nothing wanting to get exact price for shipping to texas etc. Maybe i'll hear from him soon.

Sergio:waytogo:

I can call him for you if you want. Dustin doesn't get on here much.

keep in mind 700r4's are super sensitive to heat damage from abuse (which can simply be hard use)...:dunno:

It's doubtful that there is anything wrong with this 700R4. I know Duston swapped it out for a manual trans he had in another rig.

If it's the one that was in his 'Burb, I've driven it... Worked great... I helped him put in the manual the other day...

I've heard the story about him having to get it rebuilt in Cali... He had nothing but great things to say about the guys that helped him out...

I can give him a call if you want... He's a close friend of mine...

Sure

sure dirtygoat, give him a call and report back to me with your take. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

thanks
