Throttle Cable / Bracket Help

Hey guys,
I just got a 72, and I'm loving it!

I have an issue with the acceleration cable and bracket. This is the bracket that was on it when I bought it:

It didn't fit right so I bought a different bracket. The cable is so tight that it stripped the mounting hole in the carb.

I purchased a replacement cable thinking that the previous owner had installed a cable that was a bit too short, but the cable was the correct (factory) length. So, to get things working, I had to resort to hillbilly tactics...

I am afraid that I might die when this fails though...

What the crap do I need to buy to make this sit the right way?

afa your bracket goes, it doesn't look anything like mine, so I can't really help ya there. I tried taking a few pics of my setup, but you really can't see anything. if no one offers better help, I can upload them anyway. (maybe your eyesight is better than mine. )

Your original bracket looks correct. What part of it wasnt fitting?

Hey Brian,
The cable would not stretch all of the way to the original bracket. It's almost as if the carb sits too far to the middle of the engine, so the bracket is not close enough to the cable. After I replaced the cable, I tried stretching it into the bracket, but it pulled the cable so far that you could almost see the steel of the cable coming out of the sleeve by the carb.

This also caused the carb hole to strip because there was so much tension. Could it be possible that the carb is too small to use the factory throttle bracket, or are they all standard?

Its hard to tell without seeing it, but it should fit most any 4-barrel carb. Are you sure the bracket was in the right place? It should bolt down to the rear most carb mounting screw on the manifold.

I believe that I am using the mounting point that you have mentioned. Here is a picture of the old cable that was on the original bracket. The cable actually broke because it was stretched so far. I tried the new cable on the old bracket and it was being stretched as well. Maybe I need to cut a new hole in the firewall that is a little closer to the carb? Or is there a longer bracket that I can purchase?

Also, embarrassed to show you this, but this was my initial fix until the new cable and bracket came in (even though they still dont do the job).

Funny, when i replaced mine, it was too long. Is the sheathing too short or the inner cable?

The sheathing is too short. If I stretch it to fit, the cable is exposed out of the plastic sheath near the carb. Since it is clipped into the firewall, I can only stretch the sheathing so far though.

Hmm. One way to fix it would be to replace the sheathing. I did something like that on mine. An accelerator cable from a later model k5 has a longer sheathing and then you just need to transfer the fittings/ends over from the old cable.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement factory bracket? Mine is very weak.

Quick Update,
I put the original bracket back in and forced the cable in. It seems very tight, and as you can see the cable is slightly bent. Does this look normal to you guys?

You could bend the part of the backet back just a little. That would lessen the stress on te sheathing and maybe even straighten up the cable angle.

fyi thats why you use stud kit on intake to hold carb down.

keeps you from riping threads out of intake.

I`m betting that if you remove the body lift your cable will work correctly.

You said you wanted to remove it and get a 1 inch BL...is that right?

oh, good call. I forgot about that too. yeah, I have a 3" body lift and I had to modify my bracket up a few inches to make it fit.
