Anyone ever work with throttlebodyinjection.com?

I'm looking at getting a new/reman TBI unit. Pretty sure without looking I've got a leaky injector, and the IAC may be worn. At 180+k miles, and for the first 1/2 probably hard miles, I just want to swap the whole thing.

Their prices seem nice compared to new, which will make it easier to tell my wife :) I'm just hoping that it would be a straight bolt on application.

Thanks,
Clay

Grrr....

I start thinking about these things and my truck hears my thoughts.

This morning it started dying while warming up. Once warm it seems fine, but it smells like it's flooding out when it re-fires.

No codes stored!

Temp sensor?
IAC closing?
Fuel Pump? (I think that would give more issues, not just while warming up at idle)

In the past, the ignition module always gave a code, although the pickup coil did not. The pickup coil isn't that old though, perhaps a year or so along with the ignition module.

Mostly thinking out loud.

Do a good underhood inspection...vacuum lines, electrical connectors, exhaust leaks, plugs, wires, etc. Take a look at the injectors while its running (use a light) see if the spray is good, no drips, etc. Turn it off, see if the injectors drip then.

Pay some attention to the throttle body base gasket for a vacuum leak, pretty common now.

As for replacing parts, especially electrical ones: Until things change, I will take used OEM stuff over aftermarket when I have the chance. Everything fails, I got it, but IAC's and TPS', in reality, are nearly bulletproof. Both of mine are OEM 1988, and have no issues. There are PLENTY out there running fine in that regard.

Don't mean to lecture, just that new doesn't equal better. For parts like this, IMO, better to fix what fails than preemptively replace parts.

Hi Dorian,

Thanks for the reply. Always good to get a reminder about replacing what's actually failed.

Pretty sure at least one injector is leaking even without looking. There are symptoms of that for sure; but will that cause the truck to just die all of a sudden while warming up? It's odd because it runs absolutely fine, and it's like you shut the key off.

I think I'm going to be ordering a WinALDL cable.

Thanks,
Clay

I've not experienced nor had to diagnose a leaky injector, but I would think it would be somewhat of a worsening issue, not just an on/off deal. Maybe not always? Maybe coupled with a bad coolant temp sensor or wire for it?

Yep, ALDL cable and tunerpro will help, for instance, you'll be able to see that the IAC is or is not operating properly, CTS values, so on. Very good investment thats for sure.

My EGR was clogged and made my engine not idle. I'd check that while you are checking everything else. And RV Morse has pretty good prices in anything TBI related.

I bet I have EGR issues as well... it's old after all; and when I did the heads I didn't replace everything up there. Just some things :)

I swung by Autozone and picked up some Sea Foam that was on sale. Not the best, I know. Heck last time I used it the plugs lasted 1 year. Well, I pulled them out after 1 year and they were obviously worn.

Got home and found 2 things under the hood right off. #8 plug wire had been rubbing on the exhaust manifold, arcing. White residue on the wire. And, the retainer tab on the coil plug is broken; one of the connectors had wiggled up a bit. Certainly could be causing my issues!

I guess we'll see how it does tomorrow. I did pick up a spare ignition module as well; I'm not putting it in unless I need to.

So far, still, no codes. Anyone know if there is ALDL software that runs in Linux? I think I'm going to try it, in wine.

Thanks for the tips guys,
Clay

Having a leaking injector will do exactly what you described......sad thing is, there are sensors, an egr, fouled plugs/wires and ignition module that can give you similar troubles.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that the blazer would stumble during warm-up and maybe stutter a little bit at a stop light. One morning it sounded like it almost died. Ended up being an injector o-ring. It had a very tiny piece of the o-ring (looked like it got pinched during install) that was causing it to drip while running. Changed the o-ring and now it runs like it should.

Send a message to Eaglemark...he's the man for injectors and TBI. You can send your injectors to him and for a minimum of cost (IIRC like $16\ injector) his company will service them for you. A LOT cheaper than even used injectors and you'll know FOR SURE if one of them is bad. Just my 2¢.

I help when I can but I do not do the injector service. I do refer people to Mr Injector when they do not have a quality or reputable service near by.

Mr Injector is down the street from me and will only do things properly! Great service for the cheap price!

Very, very rarely does a TBI injector go bad!!! But they do clog up and clean out well with the ultrasonic pressurized cleaning service.

What some people do not realize is there are very fine small filters on the injectors as well! Plus O rings that do fail at this age!

When removing injectors take note that they only go in properly one way. Use engine oil on O rings and surface to slide them in nicely.

There's not much else to go bad or wear out in TBI, while in there of course replace the regulator and I usually install a new spring because I have seen a few crack.

Sorry for the confusion. I remembered you had referred me when I was having trouble with my TBI. Thanks for the clarification.

Good info to know, thanks!

When I had the top end apart, I did replace the O-rings, filters, regulator diaphragm, and other gaskets. But, the injectors were not cleaned at that time.

I've seen as little as 3% difference in before and after tests to as much as 12%! And they are usually off a few percent from injector to injector! So not flow matched.

12% is a lot considering all TBI engines injectors are just barely enough to feed engine for the rated HP.

Next time anyone has one out look at the screen around the bottom and a small O screen in the middle for buildup. Very very fine micron filtration as to avoid injector clog.
