I own a 1991 V2500 Suburban w/5.7L. I just replaced the left ball joints and noticed the tie rod joint loose on that side. So, I'm replacing both sides. I had a complete spare NOS GM tie rod assembly with both joints that I'm going to use. I'm a stickler for following the manual. I'm using the 1988 10-30 series service manual that I've had for many years. But, I understand that '88 and '91 suburbans are basically the same. So, I'm applying the '88 manual to the repair. This manual covers R, V, G & P series light duty trucks. The manual shows three diagrams for the R-series, G-series, and P-series trucks that, in detail, show the correct placement of the adjusting sleeve clamps with respect to the split in the sleeve. There is a section that describes this repair for V-series trucks and a couple of other models, but there is no diagram showing any particular placement for the clamps on V-series trucks, as on the other models. In describing the re-assembly procedure there is no mention of the adjusting sleeve clamps. The section on alignments does not address this issue either. So my question is; Is there a correct placement for the adjusting sleeve clamps on V-series trucks, and, if so, what is it? Any help appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Are your clamps separate?
Mine were spot welded or tack welded on but the clamps opening should be on the crack in the sleeve so when you tighten the clamp it closes the gap and locks it in place.
I hope that was your question

Are there sleeves on both sides? If I recall (and thinking of the same part), there is only one sleeve with two clamps on the passenger side. Driver's side has a hole in it for steering stabilizer.

For replacement, match the distance about the same as old one taking off (which you probably know).

As far as the sleeves, if I have some leeway, I have the sleeve slit down so water doesn't sit in there. Haven't paid much attention to the clamps or orientation. If you take it to an alignment shop (which you should afterwards), I'd just leave it up to them to clamp it down properly.

My thoughts anyways.
