Seems 76 had a midyear break on tie rods. Early had 7/8 and late got 1". Would the 1" stuff work where 7/8 was OEM? The only difference I can see is the stabilizer mount is different. Are the tapers the same?

When I replaced the tie rods on my '82 K2500,there was 2 choices--7/8" ones or 1" threads..the listings said the 4:10 ratio axles used the 1",but if you were replacing all 3 pieces, you could substitute the 1" for the 7/8" ones..it happened to have the 1" ones,so I bought all 3 pieces (two tie rods and a sleeve),for $75 at NAPA...

The stud tapers are the same on both tie rod sizes, only the rod diameter is larger on the 1" ones..

I had some old "saved" tie rods off a '73 K10 and another 70's truck, both had the 7/8" diameter rods and the steering damper hole in the long tie rod was in a different spot--both had slop in the tie rod ends so that nixed using those rather than buying new ones..

I lucked out having saved a like new Hecklethorn steering stabilizer, the one on my truck was 100% empty and had zero resistance!--felt like it was loose inside too...

I was also lucky it still had the special tapered stud that goes in the tie rod hole on it,because I had to use a puller and hammer to get the old one out and I muckled the threads on it some--I was able to save it though by using a die on it --I saved it because I see no listing anywhere for that part, and it probably doesn't come with a new stabilizer..

I highly doubt the General would spend extra money to retool the knuckle to accept a different TRE. But it looks like you already got your answer.
