I'm doing my x over and am about to put my new d44 knuckles on but i cannot get that tie rod off. Any tips? And same with the steering arm, cannot get that off either but I havent tried much with the arm but am about to right now

Do you have a tie rod remover? Sometimes called a pickle fork.

No I don't. Is that pretty much the only way to do it? Do you think a place like autozone etc would have one?
BTW steering arm came off in under a minute now that I actaully tried (ie about 5 whacks with BFH) :D.

unscrew the nuts on the tierod ends so they are a little past the end of the threads. Hit the nuts with a hammer and try and pop them out that way. Also try turning the steering back and forth a little with the nuts loose and then retry the hammer thing. Don't swing for the fences just give it some solid whacks and see what happens.

If that doesn't work then pickle forks are cheap and available at most parts stores. There are 2 differnet kinds though so make sure you get the right one. One is for balljoints the other is for tierod ends.

I thought about doing that, but couldnt that mess up the threads with the nut being pushed down against them like that? Ill give it all a try tommorow and hopefully make some progress

Hit the knuckle where the tie rod goes in with a bfh. Don't hit the tie rod, it will mess up the threads, just hit the knuckle, right where the tie rod taper is, and it will pop it out.

Autozone, Kragen, and HF :D ... though dang, looks like Salinas is the closest one to you.

I just did this 2 weeks ago with my cross over, and if u plan on gettin all new tie rods like i did, then just hit them as hard as u can with a hammer :D

On the steering arm,I turned the front wheels all the way right then disconnect the drag link then remove the three nuts holding the steering arm.Dousche the studs real good with some penetrating lube and use your b.f.h.and smack the time out of it where the drag link connects to the steering arm. After a lot of hitting and a lot of cussin' you will get it just dont give up.tie rods will come apat if you hit right ont the knuckle it is mounted in.Just remember most of tht stuff has most likley been on there for 20 years or so,use lots of pb blaster and a B.F.H.Good luck!!!!!!

I'll try it, so hit it right behind where the tie rod goes in you mean?

To remove the tie rod I always use a 6 to 8 foot piece of pipe. Pry down on the tie rod and smack the side of the knuckle with a bfh. It'll come right out.

x3. I always hit the tie rod and messed up the threads till someone showed me this trick, works better and doesnt mess up the threads.

on the steering arm I beat up on it for a while then down a couple whacks the up again and then back down and pull out the little cones. usually only takes about 5 minutes, even on the tough ones. the bigger the hammer, the faster it goes.

my fastest time removing one after the nuts were off is about 1 min 20 sec. yes we timed it:D . used a 25lb sledge, one whack up and one down, the rest of the time was removing the cones. :D

A hydraulic bottle jack or even the OEM jack from your truck works. Set it up directly under the joint, back the nut down a few turns and run the jack up and put as much preload on the tie rod nut as you can. Smack the knuckle at the taper as others have said. It ought to pop right out. If the tierod nut is up instead of down, you need a pickle fork. Good luck.

thats the right way to remove any end that sits in a tapered seat.
