I have 2 columns that I can use when I convert my blazer to a manual tranny. One is a tilt from an auto, one is the standard column no tilt from the manual. Do non-tilt wheel columns hold up longer than tilt?

I don't know which will hold up better but I vote for tilt. I just installed a auto tilt in my standard shift K5.:waytogo:

I had a tilt to get my fat gut in. Tore the tilt mount screws out of 2 columns. Might just be because i hold on too tight. Went non tilt and started sliding the seat back.

I removed 2 tilt colums and replaced them with non-tilt ones..I never "tilted" the wheels on either of them once, and both were loose and sloppy ,felt like they were going to fall apart while driving--so I went to the bonyard and bought regular colums, rather than try tightening the bolts--I never had much luck trying to fix steering colums,or ignition lock cylinders--I just swapped another whole colum in rather than fart around for a day or two and end up having to replace it anyway
...they took my tilt colums in trade and called it an even swap, they sell a lot of tilt ones to rebuilders for cores at the junkyard I went too
..I never missed having a tilt wheel,I'm skinny and can slide in fine behind a regular colum..

The non-tilt ones might get a loose bearing after a long time--I tend to wear out colums, plowing beats on them and the steering box,you turn that wheel a zillion times while manuvering during a plow session..also wear out shifters --the linkage gets sloppy when you shift from drive to reverse about 1000 times in an hour..

I'm surprised I haven't had a valve body fall apart in a tranny yet--I did lose the "S" link on a TH350 inside the pan once..that sucked to fix in a blizzard!..

no brainer.. a non-tilt is exponentionailly more durable....

I took the tilt w/wiper one out of my 87 to put in a simple 70's no tilt/blinker only one in my K5...

Everyone thanks for the reply's! I have tilt on my blazer now and cant remember ever using the feature! I want the durability over comfort anyway. The non-tilt I have has the wiper and blinkers on column its from an 88' mines an 87' so the wiring is the same!

Looks like ill be putting the non-tilt in when I swap the pedals for the manual tranny! A plus is that the non-tilt already has a nice grant wheel.

Now to decide whether to go with my sm465 208, or my sm465 205!

The non tilt don't have the issue that obviously the tilt one does and the tilt ones only have that issue when people use the steering wheel to pull themselves into the rig.

x2
and I use the tilt in both my trucks every time I exit/enter the seat :waytogo:
couldn't do without it, I like my steering wheels as vertical as possible while driving :D

i generally prefer the tilt wheel down one detent from 'normal', and have no problem sliding under the wheel getting in or out without using the tilt.

the only vehicle I ever grab the wheel to help get into is the garbage truck.

Much prefer the tilt. I have tilt in Horton and after tightening the screws ( all 4 of them not just the 2 that are easy to get to) I am going to keep it.

I have held on tight enough to bend my steering wheel 3 times, and I use it to pull myself up into the rig

I like the tilt and drive with it all the way up, just cant use it as a pull up bar when getting in
