The tilt steering in my '83 k5 keeps slipping. If I barely bump it, it pops up. Pops up when I am turning, as well.

I'm sure there's a catch of some sort that is worn out. Anyone ever had this happen before and fixed it? Is it tough?

Yep, there is a mechanism that holds it all together at the base of the steering column. There are 3 little torx head bolts that hold everything down and into place. If they start to loosen (more like when), then it starts to get sloppy. You have to tear apart the steering column and tigthen down those bolts. While you're at it you can replace worn out bearings and other parts. If you've never done it before, give yourself a day. I can do it pretty fast, but I have the tools for it. The three specialty tools you'll need area a steering wheel puller, a steering wheel spring compressor, and th epivot pin puller. Save yourself some time and just buy the one from snap-on, spendy but they are one of the few that make them. You can do it with a socket, a small bolt and nut, but I have busted enough of those to where I went and bought the right tool for it (runs about $20). I have rebuilt my tilt steering columns many times. No too bad if you the patience and the righ tools.
