I am in the planning stages for my snorkel that I want to build out of PCV pipe. I was first thinking of doing the snorkel setup with the ARB FJ80 snorkel until I went to the local offroad shop and got a quote of $650 (these things are expensive in canada! lol). So the next plan was to build one for WAY cheaper.. even if I manage to break the entire thing off three or four times it will still be cheaper.

Enough of my rambling..... heres the question..... I have a fuel injected 350 and was wondering what size of pipe to use? I only want it coming up one side so I was thinking a 3 or 4 inch pipe? what size does this engine need to keep efficient?

seems to me 4" coupler is what i used years ago to build a spacer for a carb.to rise the air filter up so i would try that first to get it as tight as possable to start then stat as big as you can for as long as you can

I'd try 3in galvanized lite gauge exhaust tubing. Thats what I plan on making mine out of down the road. Its enough airflow, its fairly lite and more rigid, plus a Safari Snorkel topper fits its perfect.

well $680 is alot...

try

i got mine from them cheap... $321 to my door...

so my parts list..

1. snorkel
2. pvc
3. pvc elbow
4. rubber iron pipe coupler
5. stock air cleaner
6. chevy van intake riser for holleys

can give more if ya want it... pvc is good... glad I went the way I did...

I still have to bolt it to the cab... when I open the door.. I have 1/2" clearance.... perfect....

Look at your existing plumbing. On my carb'd truck the factory intake was as small as ~2" diameter, no wonder the poor thing didn't run right:

I think I ended up using 4" ducting 'cuz it fit the aircleaner housing I had. Note this isn't a snorkel per se, it's just a cold air intake, but the same idea applies.

But yours may be different 'cuz it's TBI.

If you're gonna run looong distances, like to the back of the truck or something :haha: you might want to go larger than the intake, but otherwise I figger you can use the same size as your intake.

thanks for the links Ill probably get started later on in the week.
And i Don't know how much it would end up costing, rootbreaker because I live in canada so that 321 will probably double. When I bought my bumper from blazen offroad for $580 it ended up being just under $1000 when it ended up at my door

I've never really contemplated a snorkle gig... not what I'm going after.. but I would think PVC would somehow be a good material... certainly easy, and fun, to work with...

rootbreaker what is that snorkel fit oem, i can read the make..sounds jeepish...looks right at home on there.. does rt door hit it when its open?.. i can get everything but that piece at lowes or home depot

also, where u gettin the rubber piece between breather and pvc, what is it?

its a snorkel from a fj80 heres a build thread

it fits good but you need to heat up and bend the corner

Maybe some aluminum 4" or 3" tube... turn it into a cold air/snorkel. You could always run pvc outside the fender which would be cheap and easy to repair if you busted it but at least run aluminum from the inside of the fender to the intake.

Anyone have pics of a Snorkel equipped vehicle driving with water half way up the windshield?

Down here I've seen people make them out of everything from dryer ducting and tape, to some fancy home brewed pvc types, and once I even saw the FJ-80 snorkel. The hardest part they all had was getting the thing to seal to the carb. If you can't get that seal perfect then your underwater 4x4 adventures will just be a fantasy.
