So I got this truck, it's a 94 one ton 6.5td with a 5 speed.
It has a remanufactured, in but it feels like timing is off, it smokes when driving and feels like a dog.

This is a picture of the timing marks...
I am not familiar with the computer controlled ip.
Any suggestions before I start playing with it by ear?

First I would replace that black rubber return line hose with a clear one to make sure there is no air bubbles in your lines.

Second would be a compression test which would verify the condition of your rings. Bad rings=Smoke, power loss, a lot of blow by and hard starts.

Those timing marks are not Oem so it’s been messed with already. However, I would attempt to manually time the IP by ear or get a timing machine on it.

Pending compression test results… If the compression is good, no air in fuel lines and the timing is good, next up would be injectors and/or injection pump failing.

How many miles are on this sexy beast?

Are you sure it is an electronic IP? The part in the picture looks like a mechanical DB2. If it is mechanical, here are a pair of videos I did about timing them:

It has 149k miles on it.
I just picked it up so still investigating.
It looks too advanced to me but what do I know.
I am more familiar with db2, this is my first electronic version and here's a picture showing it's not a db2 for those who asked.

Thanks for the videos.
That will help me with the 84 suburban.
But if you look at my last post I have a picture of all the electric plugs on it and it doesn't look anything like a db2

At that mileage she should be ready for an IP and Injectors. But for sure do a compression test before dumping a lot of money into it.
