intalling my dizzy. have the motor at top dead center, now the rotor pointer end is supposed to point toward cylinder #1 correct?

Yes. You will either be perfect, or 180* out, either way it will become really apparent when you try to start it.

Well, I would suggest you ballpark and try to start it. If it's 180 it backfire a bit and you'll know you are 180. If this is the case you wont want to try and set the timing but rather pull the distributor out and set it back up and then time it.

if you put it on tdc according to the balancer thats fine and dandy, but you have to remember it comes to tdc twice, once on exhaust and once on compression. Put your finger over the spark plug hole and if you feel alot of pressure on your finger or it blows your finger off the hole, you are on compression and when the balancer says you are at tdc, stab it pointing at #1. If you stab it on tdc exhaust then you are 180 out.

Also remember, the distributer and cam gears are helical (angle) cut, not straight cut, therefore when the gears engage the rotor will move about an inch as it bottoms out. Now your rotor will point to either #8 or #2 tower.
