Timing by ear / weird bad starting noises: **Edit** See end

View attachment 15708 Here's two of my favorite and cheapest tools, they really help out. The remote starter, built just as vert dog mentioned, cost maybe $10 to make. And my personal favorite plug wire puller of all time. Paid $1.98 for it off a Matco truck. I never ( knock on wood ) kill wires with it.

Ah yes... actually have a remoter starter switch, came with one of my timing lights Back In The Day.

The reason I was killing plug wires ... was, umm, I didn't use the antisneeze stuff, dielectric lube or whatever you call it :doah: I do have some Harbor Freight padded pliers ... but with the wires dried into place, wouldn't matter what I pulled 'em with :(

The new wires got goo this time round!

Well, I have come to the conclusion that vacuum advance is a good thing.

While the advance mechanism in the dizzy was *vaguely* working, i.e. when vacuum was applied it would change the timing, it was so gummed up with rust and indeterminate goo that it certainly wasn't working right.

Close inspection of the weights revealed that the bushings were gone and tehy were wearing holes in the plate underneath ... and my local parts hosue has a nice brand new HEI dizzy with cap and rotor for $10 more than a reman. Sold! :deal:

It's amazing how much smoother she runs now ... even with new cap, rotor, wires, etc before she had an intermittent miss.

The timing still jumped once or twice while I was setting her up, so I'm now suspicious that the timing chain has stretched ... it never ends! Still, she's running great and will do this weekend's 400 mile trip, so I'm happy.

I'm also grateful, again, to all the CK5 members here, and the one I pinged three times by phone today ("Doug, isn't that piece supposed to move?") ... you guys really are helpful, and my annual membership has been paid for many times over.
