i put a newish 350 motor in my K5 , i had to change from the 6 inch dampner to a 8 inch one because the 6 inch one looked crappy and put a bolt on timing tab on the cover, which looks to be in the same position as the old one. when i timed it it would barely run at 6 deg btdc so i advanded it by ear till it smoothed out. my timing light says i am running at 42 degrees advance. i haved pulled the dist out and tried lining it up with number one cyl while at tdc but its not working any suggestions about whats up. i am worried about detonation with it that far advance and not really being able do deterime exactly what the timing is at.

had the same thing years ago. wrong tab to wrong balencer. had to time it by ear. got it down perfect and drove it like that for few years.

you need to find top dead center and then remark the stuff to line up or get 2 good parts from the same motor. balencer and tab.

thanks thank what i was thinking, it seems its off 30-45 degrees
