Timing on a '94 4.3 TBI question

I searched alittle, haven't found anything specific to this truck yet, it's a '94 Silverado with the TBI 4.3 V-6.

i know there is a wire to disconnect on my '89 Burb, i would have thought there was one on this truck as well, it's not in the same location.

Anybody have any info as to where it's at.

Also i was informed awhile back to advance the timing some to help with mileage and performance out of this thing. It does seem alittle "dogish" from a dead stop. I read on another site, someone recommended setting the timing to 6* to help get the fuel going down the intake alittle sooner and firing as well...

what we think here...
 
eh, think i found the answer for the wire location, but i have this under the passenger side dash disconnected, tan with black stripe, and according to my timing light, this thing is WAY advanced already,,,


headin back out to check some more on this thing..
 
tbi is 0* and got to find the wire to unplug. pass side fireway under cover or in behind the glove box some place .

key off.

unplug wire

start up and check engine light on

set timing and turn off.

plug in wire and fire up.
 
well,not sure what the deal is here, it runs fine and all, but was hoping to try to get alittle more mileage out of it, it just doesn't seem to be as good as it should.

I disconnected that wire, and noticed on my timing light, there didn't seem to be any position change on the balancer. So i said to heck with it, moved the distributor alittle each way, did it by ear basically, and when retarded, it made the motor sound like it was lugging, throttle response wasn't there, so i moved it back to advance, sounded better obviously, throttle response came back. I moved it alittle more advance and then it started sounding weird again and the idle started to drop, so i backed it up to about a happy medium.

Throttle is responsive, starts and shuts off just fine, just not able to get an accurate reading on the balancer with my light for some reason.

Weird thing is, i have had this intake off the motor in the past, so obviously the distributor was out, and i put it all back together, but do not remember doing anything with the tan wire...

i dunno.

guess i leave well enough along and stay away from the Navy motto... "If it isn't broke, fix it till it is" :D :doah:

did all that, found that wire, generally i don't have a problem with getting them timed right, i didn't know right off where that wire was on this truck though, but after some searching, i found it, and went the normal routine.
 
Don't know what kind of mileage your getting, but on my wifes 89 s-10 blazer 4.3-700r4 combo. We get about 16-17 going 75. I'm sure around town it's a lot less. And yes timing set at 0.
 
yeah, i know about the 0* initial timing ith the tan wire disconnected, i'm just not getting that reading on the balancer.

Unless i haven't located the correct tan wire with the black stripe behind the glove box... :tongue1:

I'm wondering if the possible faulty knock sensor is telling the computer to do something i am unaware of, i can work on them, and know somewhat the general basic function of the sensors, but still have alot to learn as far as what each electrical component actually does or doesn't do i guess when it faults out. Not sure if this is making sense, or if ya understand what i'm trying to say here... :doah:

I know i have a code for the CTS and the knock sensor, cleared out the codes and they re-lit within a few minutes.
 
The CTS code could be messing with the timing. I would check the CTS sensor and if it's bad then replace it first before doing anything else. Oh, and a bad CTS sensor would definately cause poor mileage.
